Garmin GPS296 and interference (again)

Postby ZULU1 » Mon Dec 08, 2008 7:53 am

I always like to share my experiences with the forum as we meet more than our fair share..

The Garmin GPS 296 is renowned for its interference emission on certain frequencies, namely 124,8mhz. Others its fine. So we developed the Vee rabbit antenna, 99% hit rate to fix the problem. OK, now poor Andrew Strydom in E London has a Vee rabbit, power supply, VXA 220 all the right toys. same problem. Sent back to us and all perfect. After deeper investigation he has run the cable for the antenna down the profile tube, right next to the GPS !! My fault as I should have stated on the instruction sheet.

Try to run the coax feed cable behind the king post then behind the pylon, under the keel and as far away from the GPS as possible. Also I advise to feed the GPS from a isolated supply via a regulator or something. If you have installed the cable like this the squelch of the radio may be reduced and prevent noise ingress. The above does not apply to the Icom ICA200/210 series.

Any questions please contact us on (032) 5255168

Centrifugal force in pure Physics does not exist, however this does not apply to Taxi drivers..
