Brakes on a trike + Weight issues

Postby JACO » Wed Mar 21, 2007 8:01 pm

Hi all, I was wondering, and spoke to a few people about removing my trike's front wheel brake, and replacing it with rear wheel brakes, But the folks around here has mixed feelings on the matter, some say yes, some say no. Would'nt distrubuting the "brake" weight to the rear wheels be better that all the weight on the front wheel ??

Next, My trike's silver top 582 is mounted very high, thus increasing the "top heavy" effect. Why is some engines way up there and others lower down ?? Can I turn myne upside down ??

Thanx

Hi,

I met a guy at Delmas airfield once (I think he flew in from Secunda or Witbank) that had a Raptor with hydraulic brakes (disks) on the rear wheels only - he said they were awesome and an improvement on the front brake.

Having your engine high is a plus! Wish I could turn my Windlass engine right side up! Changing spark plugs is a hassle upside down. You will also have better prop clearance with yours right side up (less chance of damaging prop on a stone thrown up by the wheels). Have a look at Aquilla's and check how high their engines are - this is not a problem.

JACO,

Looks like you have room to play with as your gearbox is mounted so the prop axis is below the crank axis, So you could lower the engine and turn the gear box around and you have a lower engine and the same clearance.

But my motto is leave well enough alone.

Proper disk breaks on the back wheels on the Aquilla! Now that would be worth investing in.

Daarom dat "brake calipers" so ontwikkel is.

This is a project that is being seriously attended to. Will keep you posted.

You should have a look at some of the braking systems on quads, the discs are small but have awesome stopping power.
