Cheap Strobes
Cheap Strobes
Hi All,
I have a Savannah (just like Ian's) and I find that with the Gauteng Viz I sometimes get lost against the backdrop.
I am looking for a strobe light to act as a beacon. I have found two el cheapo types from communica.
But they are about as aerodynamic as a brick stuck onto the aerie.
So wanted to know if you guys know of any suppliers or brands that I can use?
Failing that, will there be interest in Hi Bright LED cluster Nav lights and flashing beacons for about a R 1000. I know a guy that can develop them for us. But too expensive for an once off.
Regards
Falcon

Hi Guys,
I can add a bit here, have done the same exercise just now, for the RV.
What I have found out can be applied to Micro's
Cheap strobes...hmmm..you get what you pay for!!!
The Cheap ones like this:

http://www.7-stars.com/f34.htm
Only put a tiny 3Watts and is pathetic actually.
The Sportflying shop ones is nice but very expensive.
Rather buy them from http://www.strobesnmore.com/ the cheapest price for GOOD stuff. I am going to place my order for the RV soon!
Get them to ship it via USPS Global Airmail Parcel Post, the cheapest option in my experience to SA, arrives typically in 2-3 weeks.
The best decent option for a trike is this one: ($140)
http://strobeguy.safeshopper.com/17/cat17.htm?248

It is a 40 Watt unit, hence if you put 2 strobe lights on you get 20Watts per 'strobe head', not a whimpy 3W like above. What I like it is Epoxied, rugged, waterproof, encapsulated put anywhere on your trike. I like that it is also tested and EMI/RFI filtering done. It has a lot of nifty features as well, check out the link.
You don't get a strobe covers though, buy the cheap strobes at Midas throw away their insides, and fit the good ones. Or use a tot class glued over it...
The Manufacturer, Nova, was started down the road from Whelen, by old Whelen employees, so you get the good stuff at better prices.
If you are in a hurry you can get a 40watt 4 globe unit in SA for R2000 ex VAT in Midrand, from a place that sells to Traffic Cop Cars.
For my RV I am getting a better unit 60W, 3 Globe unit.
If you want a good unit, and want to share the shipping costs, send me a PM, I am ordering in a week or two. Landing cost in my experience with the RV orders are +/- R10 to 1$ after VAT and duties, so call it +/- R1,400.
Kind Regards
Rudi

Hi Ian,
Nice find, I like the mounting, good power, 30 Joules ~ 20 Watts per strobe, but also a bit expensive, this one is 408 Euros for 2 strobes and lights. Kind of the same price as the Sporty's one $399...or what am I missing??

Rudi, I dont know, but I bought one as an option on the Sav kit with the Wheelan (?) wing tip lights. It seems (on the bench) to work very well. If you want to have a look you are welcome anytime.RudiGreyling wrote:Hi Ian,
