Garmin 96C- Help

Postby Tumbleweed » Sun Sep 10, 2006 6:11 am

After (twice) informing my destination that their given g.p.s. co-ords wre wrong, decided to download onto the P.C.

There, to my amazement, shows my previous track's circuits and landings missing the runway and landing on top of Sasol 3  I was out by about 1km.

Downloaded the upgrade - GPS shows empty. ( Same feeling when you fiddle with the camara and wipe out a year of pics)

Plug back into P.C, send data back to GPS - OK! My tracks show where they were supposed to be.

Why would the GPS loose accuracy?. No, my brats did'nt fiddle and could probably solve this before me.

Now after searching, can't seem to find my allocated waypoints, mostly bush strips or that were'nt previously loaded with the established 'FA 'strips.

Have seen GPS co- ords of the relevant strips offered on the destination forum, but hav'nt been succesful in loading.

Can someone explain in slow English how do download (capture on USB to take home) download on PC to make sense and send to GPS 96C.

Also can't find the correct South African map. When I select 'Nearest airports' it suggests somewhere in central Russia or the States. Some of the maps on the 'drop down' have numbers, but no welcoming 'South Africa'

Short of this, I'll try " When all else fails, consult the (does'nt explain) manual or contact the agents. ( Courier up and down, pay them money and still not know how to fix)

Thanks

Thanks. Will play some more.

Just can't find the right map from the 'dropdown' selection.

Delta VV are you referring to the aviation maps or the generic maps of South Africa. If you are refering to the generic maps, they are available on http://www.garmin.com under the Support section. You can even order the South African City Select CD from them $125. Follow the instructions on installing these files

Detailed South African road maps are available from Garmap, a south african company. You can get the latest Garmap CD's at any GPS supplier

Your generic software that you should use is Mapsource, software also available on the Garmin website. When you load up the City select CD and the Garmap software they will load into Mapsource.

You then connect your GPS to the PC, start up mapsource and download all the data to/from the GPS.

To get the lastest Aviation data, go to the Garmin website and open the products page. Select the 96C. At the top of the page you will see the logo for Jeppersen Nav Data

click here, select your product and at a cost of $35 you can download the latest update

Hope this helps

Thanks all,

The map is now where I should be, just can't seem to select my Waypoints page onto the page frequence or order. I prefer to load all destinations including radio frequency, runways e.t.c as a waypoint. The 96C only has established strips loaded.

Have had to change destinations in flight and hope to 'hear' the right strip frequency and find it's a mission to search in flight.

Now write all on the profile tube with a permanent marker.
