Hi For Those who don't know:
I/We are doing Aerotowing of Hang Glider clos to Brits - for more details see the posts on Who fly what and where under Hanger Talk
My Question:
Our trike is equiped with a 582 Rotax and has served us wel until date.
But the 65 horses on the 582 is a bit little for a tandems up on the highveld - We manage, but more power would really be nice (and safer)
Problem is I can't add weight to my trike since that increase my towing speed that is already high.
Can Anyone tell me about the reliability, avaialbility and cost of other engines that weigh the same but have better power output. (pref 80 to 100 HP)
I've looked at the Simonini Victor2 and the Hirth 3701 ES.
Is there other options or any comments on these?
Thanks
Tobie

The Jabiru 2200A, 85hp, is the same weight as the 582 so that might be an option ?
BTW, I would love to come have a look, take a few photos and maybe have a tandem flight sometime, when/where do you operate from ?
Safe flying,
Rudi

We have two planes with Hirth 100hp engines here in the Western Cape. One being a Rans S10 and the other a clipped wing Kolb Mark III. The pilot of the Rans is a very active flyer and regularly performs aerobatics with this amazing plane. Using the fuel injected motor has helped with the barrel rolls and inverted flight as their are no float bowls to run empty.
His typical take offs are barreling along the runway and then launching into a vertical climb.
Both guys are extremely impressed with this motor.
The Hirth is available in SA here Warren James

I was very disappointed last week when a brand new plane in our region was fitted with a Simonini Victor 2 engine which had an abrupt seizure with less than 10 hours on the hobbs. Fortunately the pilot excercised very good airmanship and landed the aircraft dead stick in a field with no dmage to the aircraft. The motor is still to be opened up and inspected for the cause of failure, but the pilot said that the engine made some very alarming noises followed by a loud band which resulted in the prop stopping dead...(total seizure)
I heard that because the engine was supplied with the kit from overseas, the local Simonini agent isn't interrested in assisting with any product that wasn't sold by them directly. (only what I have heard indirectly, so if anyone knows different, please correct me)
This being the case as well as other factors, then it is good motivation to support the two largest brands of light engines available and supported in South Africa (Rotax and Jabiru) as both brands receive support from local distributors whether the engine was sourced through them or not. Many of the larger kit suppliers have special price deals with the engine suppliers and can therefore ship an engine with the kit (one per serial number) usually at a price far lower than what it can be purchased from the local engine distributor. Thumbs up to the Rotax and Jabiru local dealers who support engines supplied in this manner....(Even larger kits like Van's aircraft offer Lycoming motors on a one per serial number cheaper than what you can get it from another source)
My own personal experience is that you can source an 85HP Jabiru motor complete for a lower price than a Rotax 80HP complete......
Regarding 2-strokes.....You won't find a more reliable engine in the 2-stroke range than the Rotax 582....But considering the fuel burn (especially if used for training) and maintenance issues, you will be far better off spending a little extra and going for a 4-stroke..... (Isn't your life worth the little extra?)
I have not not seen the Hirth and have little knowledge about it, but Warren James is a well respected person in the aviation community and he owns a business that involves performance and racing engines (motorcycles), so give him call and do some homework on it.....He is currently building a turbine single seat helicopter, but has many hours on microlight aircraft.....
