Help on starter

Postby Gideon » Sun Aug 27, 2006 9:28 pm

Hi all

Have a 503 with the belt driven starter assemble as shown in picture, now the needle bearing case broke up. Need information on where to get new needle bearing or how to fix it. The needles catch to one side and free to the other side...

Gideon,

Those are actually not needle bearings. The unit is called a sprag clutch. It is designed to allow the starter moter to rotate the engine - once the engine is running the clutch disengages so the engine cannot turn the starter.

If you take it out of the pulley you should see some markings on the side. You take these to any bearing supplier and they will supply you with a equivalent/same unit.
