Postby Johannvs » Mon Jul 17, 2006 1:46 pm

Hi, can you guys tell me what is the better engine to have, I know about speed, weight etc, but from an operation and reliability side.

503, 582, 9xx

Then maybe something about TBO etc…

Hi Johann,

that is a 'loaded' question for a first post...do a search on this website, a lot has been discussed already, if still unclear then ask again..

Without a doubt 4 stroke are more reliable and have a much longer TBO. But they are also much more expensive. It's horses for courses.

I believe in two stroke motors but if money was not an issue then I would immediately go the 4-stroke route.

You are still prone to the biggest single cause of engine outs and that is fuel mismanagement. Dirty filters, bad fuel, crack in fuel lines etc can and do happen to both.

Here is a comparison of cost of ownership taking services etc into consideration. It shows that the 503 and 582 are cheaper to own and run until around 1200 hours. So if you are going to keep your plane longer than 1200 hours then the 4-stroke becomes the more cost effective solution.
