John sorry about your incident, and so glad you are ok. (^^) On the positive side, you have learnt what no book or instructor can teach you. Experience is irreplaceable.

I fully agree with Alan's comments, when you see you are not going to be able to go around, I.e. on round out..switch off the mags..it halves your rolling distance and reduces risk of injury & damage. Also, as soon as you are on the ground, pull in the bar fully...I have broken my sunglasses in my top pocket doing this. The brakes are of little use...only use them at the last moment, if all else fails. Don't take your feet off the steering...except if you are about to hit a solid object. (**)

My 2c worth...glad you are ok (^^)

Mr Louis, jy sal plan moet maak. Boom afkap...of so iets...Ek wet nie  Ek is nou bang vir jou strip!

I love the little "grunt" and the URGH! at the end of the clip

John, it looks like you carried quite a bit of speed in the approach? This may just be a camera illusion though? Your thoughts?

Also the tower (far away) reports wind light and variable...what was the wind condition at Jdans? :)
Hey Alan,

If you watched the video you will have heard some other guys joking with FALA ATC about S&R whilst I was coming in on final. Then my quick report "BST on Final". Then, focusing hard on short final approach and having not given them a read-back, FALA ATC asked "BST, do you copy". However, but due to the focus on flying it was just a quick "copy" when they again asked for a read-back!

Wind conditions were negligible down in the valley where Jakkalsdans is located. Windsock was pap!

All-in-all a good learning experience from which others can hopefully learn!

I hope fellow aviators can see the benefit of having a video to extract the EXACT happenings from as well as being humble enough to share those happenings with the world!

Had this happened with other incidents (Bantan 6 at Kroon springs to mind! ) it would greatly assist us all in learning from them.

Safe Skies! (-)

Back to pulling in the bar to assist with braking, I have found that by pushing the bar out to the profile tube you create far more resistance to assist braking than pulling in.

In theory TW...you are probably correct about "wind resistance"...but I would argue that you have more control over the nose wheel with the wing pitched down (downforce). This is one of the biggest problems on the Aquilla with the front braking system.

I'll try both tommorrow and report back (^^)

Classic! (!!)

Oh...and I forgot to report back.

No doubt that on MY plane, it's better to brake with the wing pitched down...on a rear wheel braking system I think the opposite would be the case. :)

Great story, glad to hear all is good and thanks for the heads up as it is important to make a mental note of all things when it comes to flying safe..

Good one Robbie! Yes, I knew after my eventful landing that this would evoke a few chuckles! The important lesson is to share experiences so that others can learn! (^^)

John I must admit that even though I know the runway well by now, I'm now more aware when landing.
