That's good news Stephan. At least the "expensive" problem is out of the equation :D
But do bear it mind please......idling for a long period and then applying full power CAN lead to a cold seizure :(
If anyone's interested, I can post the full explanation of a cold seizure and how to avoid it.

Good Idea - we can only benefit from it! What is the max idling time? should you rather switch of while waiting for trafic? Warm up period? how long should you warm up the engine?

That will be good to know, and the other thing I'm not sure about is what is the best way to clean the filters and how often, imagine that depends on the area one flies in, do one use normal soapie water, petrol or some other petroleum products etc?

Depends on wether they have been stuffed up or not.

They right way to clean them is with soapy water and washing up liquid, then left a few hours to dry and finally reoiled using Air Filter Oil. I struggled to find K&N filter oil and finally found some up in JHB at a bike shop. I did see there are other brands available on the bike shop shelves that could be cheaper.

Other guys just use petrol to clean them but apparantly this stuffs the paper in the filter up. Look at the paper if it is blackened and no evidence of red then at some stage it was washed using petrol. (the air filter oil is red in colour)

I flew my plane from the time I bought it 420hours until 520 hours with the old filter that was cleaned with petrol. Niren warned me against it and I changed the filter and now use this method. However, I personally nor the previous owner ever had an air filter problem.

This should be done every 10 hours more if dusty, less if not.

I know its sounds ridiculous but it was realy the air filters, tried on another trike, same problem - low rpm +/- 3000. Bought a new airfilter - the double K&N - from aviation engines and a bottle of K&N Filter Oil. I did'nt know how the previous owner of the trike washed the filter i.e the damage already done to the filter so i just replaced it. Double Air Filter Looks great.

Fantastic

At least now you have that comfort in your mind that you found the problem. What amazes me is how sudden the problem appeared. One moment you were running fine the next the filter was too blocked to allow the engine enough air to rev beyond 3000RPM

Thanks Yunkie for that info!

Do you just pour the filter oil over the filter element, or immerse it and then let it drip dry or paint it on the outside with a paintbrush? Feel silly to ask a question like this.

Don't go mad, Once the airfilter is clean and dry pour a little at a time into each of the grooves. The oil will soak into the paper and spread itself

Areas that the oil did not get to require a drop or two. You just want the filter red in colour but not dripping with oil.

And I bet you feel great now that you've checked out the ENTIRE engine and knowing everything's in order :D

You get oil too? I have had K&N filters in my cars since 1992, always used the spray, never knew you got a liquid as well! I would be VERY weary of the liquid...
