I have checked my vx7r and is receives perfectly on air band and does transmit a few metres but is perfect on other bands especially the 136-174 band and also the low band and alao the uhf and pmr bands. It is opened up with a software reset. The vxa 710 receives on the commercial bands but the previous vxa 700 receives on the 136-174 band also. They are obsolete though. ...This is radio ham territory now..The vx 8r is even more complicated but i can lend this vx7r to you if you wish? Its name is come back though.

I think i found the radio!

The IC -80ad vhf/uhf Wideband receiver
The IC-80AD has a wideband receiver as a standard feature and covers 0.495-999.99MHz. *Listen to aviation, marine, weather channels and other utility communications*.

This is not the sort of topic which should be discussed on an open forum, in fact in terms of the current legislation, it is not a topic for discussion anywhere, except maybe between friends on a face to face basis. Just remember that if I can read this forum, so can others who may not be as tolerant as me. Also remember that an illegal piece of radio equipment can only be made legal by being type-approved for a particular function, or for operation on a particular segment of the frequency spectrum. Some equipment can never be type-approved ito our current legislation, e.g. scanners operating above 30 MHz. Additionally, even if a radio is type-approved for use in SA, the moment you modify it the type-approval becomes invalid and it has to be re-tested before it may legally be used or licensed in its modified form. No radio operating on the air band and marine band has ever been type-approved for use in RSA (or in most other countries) and given the current state of technology, it is extremely unlikely that one ever would be.

Please accept this posting in the spirit it is written and be a little more careful of what you discuss openly, paticularly when it involves modifications.

I agree with this statement, can we delete this thread, certain equipment in the wrong hands can cause total chaos. Similar to a Arduino project used as a drone controller...
