Garmin GPSMAP 295 - Software Update

Postby LenM » Sun Jan 30, 2011 10:50 pm

Hope you can assist...
I have recently acquired a GPSMAP 295 and want to ensure that I have the latest set of maps and software loaded onto it.

Who could I contact in SA to update the software for me?

Thanks!!

Hi Len,

it's an easy DIY job. All you need is a data cable and a Windows PC.

1. The latest firmware is available from Garmin at no charge: http://www8.garmin.com/support/collecti ... 0-00200-00. The installation instructions are on the screen after you agreed to the T&C. Basically you download the package, unpack it, plug in the GPS and run the updater.

2. The latest South African (non-aviation) maps are available from http://www.garmap.co.za. You can order the DVD from the web site or buy it at Cape Union Mart or other outdoor stores for a few Rands. Since the 295 is a rather old device, you'll probably have to buy a new licence key. That's quite expensive. There are ways around it, but that is not to be discussed on an open forum. You can use Garmin's free MapSource software to transfer selected maps, waypoints and routes to the device. It comes with the maps, but you can also download it from Garmin directly.

In case you don't have a data cable, you can pick one up from ebay for a few dollars incl. shipping. Just have to wait +/- 3 weeks for it to arrive.

Hope this helps!

Cheers,

V.

Thanks V!
Did the firmware download and will investigate the actual maps. Garmap/Garmin seems not to support aviation products in SA(?). They actually referred me to an aviation supplier in Gauteng. For the life of me I can now no longer remember who that was...
Might have to give them another call, was hoping someone on the forum might be able to assist.

Thanks for all of your assistance.
Gave Garmin SA a call this morning and they refered me to: Century Avionics at Lanseria. THAT was who I was looking for.
They did inform me that even though they could do the updates they would also recommend I follow "V's" suggestion and do it myself.
So thanks! Let me see what damage I can do! ;-)
