E Gearbox oil leak

Postby ilikeatrike » Thu Aug 19, 2010 9:05 pm

Hey Everyone,

Just wondering if anyone has had oil leaking from thier E-gearboxes and possible solutions.

My Aquilla not even a year old with 40 hrs total time leaks oil from the rear of the propshaft PTO side, about a tablespoon/hour.
Has been looked at twice by experienced rotax technician (under warranty).
On fist time the oil seal was replaced but it started leaking again after about 6-7 hrs, second time spring on seal was made slightly tighter
but it started leaking again after about 8 hrs.
Anyone had any similar problems to this?
My Gearbox is going to be removed from engine and stripped for inspection by rotax.

Cheers,

Check the shaft that runs through the seal for damage or rust, can cause the seal to leak very quickly after fitting. Even the smallest nick etc can cause seal failure.

Agree with wiskeyfoxtrot on shaft. Even very slight rust pitting can wear the seal instantly. Sometimes the damage can be polished off with scotchbright.

One other very unlikely cause could be a blocked breather
