Radio volume and Headset volume

Had a scary experience flying through Pinedene corridor last Saturday

I radio GRand Central and request rooting via pinedene for Petit and I hear

Delta Brrrrt t.... Mike (DFM)..... mabrr rtfffff..... 6000 feet brr ttt NH 1024....... brrttm mmmfffhh htttt...... extended centre line



I had to ask the ATC to repeat 3 times before hearing that he said "DFM, QNH is 1024, maintain 6000ft, report crossing extended centre line approaching Shell Ultra City"

Changed to Waterkloof next and I could hear the ATC reasonably clear then


I use a combination V-Rabbit Airial, Airmagic intercom and Headset and Vertex radio - Good equipment by anyone's standards

Zulu came to my help and suggested that the difficulty I had was volume levels between radio and headset:

The headset was too loud and radio too soft or headset too soft and radio too loud - I can't remember now but this caused the distortion.

Has anyone had similar experience? What volume's do you use?

From my experience if i cant hear i turn the volume UP and if its tooo loud then i turn the volume down... its not rocket science Dave... soft - turn up, loud, turn down... say it to yourself big fella, you will get the hang of it

This is a common issue when running through two volume controls, particularly if you have some type of amplification. If you have source set to high you get distortion as it is operating above normal. And this carries through to the second volume control and gets worse. If the sourse is set too low the second has to be set high and you get the same problem. So if your radio is set to max and the headset turned down it sounds kak. If teh radio is too low and teh headset turned full its sounds kak too.

Set radio to the clearest setting and use the headset to fine adjust.
