150 Hour service
150 Hour service
Can anybody advise me on the requirements of the 150 hour service on a 582.
According to the updated service schedule that I have it states that the rings and piston crown need to be inspected. A note on the bottom of the page says the inspection can be done via the exhaust port.
The reason I am asking is that the AP that I use says the heads and barrels must come off. I really don't want a motor with only 150 hours on pulled apart for no reason unless it really has to be done.
Any advise would be appreciated.

Hey coastwise,
At my 150 hour service, the rings & pistons were inspected through the exhaust port. I also dont think that you should have to strip a good motor down to " check ". A lot of motors seem to have problems & engine outs etc after they have been pulled apart! Why strip a perfectly good motor?.Crank "freeplay " can be checked via the sparkplug hole with the right instruments. So non destructive testing gets my vote!. Im sure Morph will be able to fill you in with more info on this.
Just another thing, where did you get the front "pod " on your raptor? ( looks great ).

Airspeed, altitude, or brains....you always need at least two

Whiskeyfoxtrot the pod came off the Aviate Aspect that I bought while busy with my training, so don't have a clue as to where the previous owner got it.
Aviate Aspect lasted 16 hours before the wing decided to try and put my instructor and myself in a box six feet under, ended up rebuilding complete new trike with Raptor cart and wing.

Well, maybe that explains why he wants to take it apartcoastwise wrote:Hi Duck
No other AP's in my area that I know of.

Bottom line is, it doesn't need to be stripped. You CAN inspect through the exhaust port. Just insist.

Handsoff speed 60 - 65mph. Bar in about 75mph. once or twice have had 85 - 90 mph.
Winter it does help a bit by keeping the wind off the body, but still gets the top of the head.

Re: 150 Hour service
Guys, i had the same problem after my 300hr. Motor wasn't running properly after strip down and found gasket paper in the one carb bowl and after the first hour the cross shaft seal allowed water to leak into the cross shaft gear cavity! the AP said the shaft needs replacing. Wrong! Ipulled the shaft and replaced the seals, which were not fitted correctly!!!!!! R6500.00 later and nothing to be found wrong, and then it starts playing up. oh, and on top of it all, the motor had no spark, so i take it out and take it home and test it on the bench and it has spark. put it back in and no spark. AP mixed the wires up on the connector block!! Need i go further? Dont forget it's 300hr or 8yr, whichever comes first.
I have 12 years Kart racing experience and i have seen many many times how a perfect running motor blows up after a rebuild. You get FAULTY NEW PARTS!!!!!
I'll leave it at that. It's all about making money!!!

Re: 150 Hour service
Must have worked on the bench in " Zim " before coming to SA ! ( fixing tractors ? )
Does Rotax have such a SLACK approach on who becomes APs to fix these motors. Dont you have to go through various exams to prove you CAN strip and reassemble a motor and do it correctly! and what paperwork do you have to show to an unwitting " customer " to prove you are capable.
I have heard so many of these stories that it looks like buying a new motor is the way to go ( if you have got the cash ) that "fixing it ".
WHY fix it if it aint broke!
