Annual inspections and ATF

Postby Alpha » Mon Mar 15, 2010 7:57 am

Hi All,

I was just needing some info and I know microlighters will definitely be able to help. As I am sure you can see I am new to microlighting and have a few questiuons regarding the Annual inspections and authority to fly. Question 1: Do I have to get a new authority to fly every year? Question 2: The annual inspection, will it be good enough to validate my Authority to fly for another year or do I need a new ATF if the one I have is still current? Question 3: Who could I contact with regards to doing an annual inspection on my Trike. I have an Aviate Aspect Cosmos with a Raptor wing powered by a Rotax 503, being based in the northern cape it is difficult to get someone here to do this. I will travel to JHB/PTA for the annual hoping that there wiull be someone who can help me over a weekend. Question 4: What is the current rate for an annual inspection and once done where does one send it, RAASA? Thanks guys for all your advice and help.

Fly Safe
Question 1: Yes, only valid for one year.
Question 2: The annual inspection is a required part of getting a renewed ATF. So you get the inspection done, then apply for ATF. An annual inspection does not extend an expired ATF.
Question 3: Any AP can do the annual inspection, you will have to find one, AFAIK an AP is not limited by type and can do inspections on all trikes/ microlights.
Question 4: RAASA fees are R100 I am not sure how much an annual inspection is with an AP. It will vary and depend on what needs to be done.

Below is a quote from the raasa website with the requirements : http://www.raasa.co.za/authority-to-fly
a. Form RA 24.1 (original)

b. Copy of the last page of the aircraft flight folio;

c. Copy of the applicable page of the airframe logbook signed by AP;

d. Copy of approved flight manual for the aircraft; (POH/Aircraft Manual Approved CAA stamp appears on this page)

e. Copy of valid Mass and Balance for the aircraft within last five years;

f. Copy of current equipment list for the aircraft, i.e. instruments, radio and type, transponder, etc;

g. Copy of the valid ICASA radio station licence for the aircraft or proof of payment to ICASA;

h. Copy of the certificate of registration for the aircraft, (C of R).

i. Copy of last ATF.

j. Photograph of the aircraft can be either sent as a colour hard copy or emailed to RAASA at info@raasa.co.za This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

k. Proof of payment R100.00

There is a guy in Bfn (Sarel) that will drive out there. He does ours in Vryburg. Will send number if you need it, else contact the guys in Kuruman. IIRC there is AP there.

Remember this, your ATF is limited to 12 months or 100 hours, whichever comes first. So in other words if you only do 50 hours, over 12 months it expires, or 100 hours over 3 months it expires. Requires an AP to do the inspection. Your AP has to be rated on Flex wing/weight shift aircraft

I have never seen the 100 hour bit? I regularly fly more than 100 hours a year per plane........

As far as I know the AP needs to be rated for the class of plane ie.Rag and tube or all metal.

Morph, I am not questioning the house of knowledge, but I have never heard of the 100 hr one ? Although it would make sense. Similar to a vehicle's warranty of 15 000km or 1 year.

Interesting though :?:

TCA is released back into service (MPI) for 12 months or 100hrs... Most Lyc and conti engines and blik airframes have 100hr checks and oil changes and that where it came from I am told.

I know a couple guys who do 300hrs plus in 12 months. Recomended that they do oil changes and 100 hr inspections though. Brings back the owner maintenance issues though? ##

As for the owber Maintenance issues...what is the standing as far as doing ones own servicing of regular items, I.e spark plugs, filters oil etc.??? Is there a specific service that needs to be done by an AP? (**)

Yes as far back as I can remember it was to do with a compulsory check by an AP every 100 hours. But I do admit, this is what my first AP told me and I stuck by it. I'll dig into the regs and see what I can find.

Only Type certified aircraft have to have 100 hour inspection plus annual. NTCA annual inspection only.

What happens if you fly 250hrs a year and you are not allowed to do owner maint? Who does the oil change, plugs, 100hr engine inspections, snags etc? I did big hrs first year(s) I owned the RV. I did 30hrs in first month (10 first day) :oops: :oops: :oops: :oops: :oops:

Just asking what you folks do that fly 200+hrs a year. I know there are plenty trikers who top this....

I used to get "annual" done every 100hrs same as TCA, so got some years 2.5 ATF's a year :oops: :oops: :oops: :oops: :oops: Since I have now found AP who will hold my hand and let me help with the work this will change. Work will still be done every 50/100/150hrs, but not by AMO (^^) (^^) (^^) (^^) (^^) (Used to be life insurance issue that maint be done by AMO even though it is/was NTCA)
