Swapping engines?

Postby justin.schoeman » Tue Jan 10, 2006 11:14 am

Hi all,

I am busy evaluating options for a 3 axis plane... The only problem, is that a lot of them come with Rotax 582 motors, and I am not that keen on flying something with a 2-stoke motor in. Yeah, call me a wimp, but hey ;-) .

I would like to find out what the costs would be in swapping out engines. Is there a market for used 582's, if so, what sort of price could I expect to get for one (say 200-300 hours)?

What would be my chances of finding a used low-hour Rotax 912(s), or Jabiru 2200? And what sort of prices do they go for? I suppose I would have to send the engine in for a complete check-up on purchase too?

Thanks all!

Saw a 80 hp Jabi in press for R50K. 912's tend to be more expensive. Good 582 with prop will prob go for R20K? Think engine mount will be biggest problem in most cases...

IMHO it depends on the plane. (If it a Bush Baby for eg chat to Monty, as he has plenty contacts and there seems to be movement in the market.)

PS
Think new fuel injected VW used on Cubby's and Zenairs are about R50K zero timed, which may able be an option.

Thanks for the info. Again, I may be a bit paraniod, but I prefer to go with engines that meet certified standards. Which leaves the 912 and Jab engines. I know the actual engine is not certified, unless you pay a lot extra, but from what I understand, the certified/uncertified engines roll of the same production line, with exactly the same components - just don't have the paper work attached?

A just been rebuilt 912 on the market here in PE. Brand new crank etc installed. (PM me if you want contact details of seller) Think it is going somewhere in the R50k mark. Seller upgraded to 914.

582 with 300 hours is pretty much on the rebuild if one adheres to the manufacturers spec. Will cost about R15k to rebuild with new crank etc.

Maybe also see if Aviation engines may want to assist you with a trade in of the 582 for a 912.

Hi Justin.

I am very new here, but if I may give my opinion, I would much rather have a 2 stroke behind me (or under or in front). This may well show my inexperience, but my reasoning stems from experience with Auto Union cars. They have 2 stroke engines, and are extremely reliable. What I like most is their simple straightforward design. Very few components inside the engine, thus less to replace when it wears out. Also less to go wrong

I suppose they are less economical, and less environmentally friendly. I doubt whether they are less reliable though!
