Rotax 582 Coil Rewire

Postby Spurwing » Mon Feb 08, 2010 12:19 pm

Hi
One of the charging coils on my magneto has burnt out - no resistance reading from that coil and a small black mark on side of coil. Otherwise the rest of the unit is in good shape - Aviation engines want R4500 for a replacement .

Are there any other options available to me like rewiring etc

The black coils are high tension ignition ones - not charging. If you have another used coil you can remove one of them and re-solder it in place of the burnt one. If the charging coil is damaged it is a complete re-winding excercise (unlikely as it is a very thick pice of copper - Only found one instance where this was burned through)

A charging coil seldom burns through as it stops making significant current as soon as it shorts out. The reason that it shorts out is a breakdown of the insulating coating painted on the wire in the form of varnish (not wood varnish) If you can see the black mark where the coil is shorted, then the damage is on the outside of the coil and was probably caused by being dropped or bumped prior to it being fitted to the engine. A coil damaged like this will often run for many hours before finally giving up the ghost. If the problem is on the outer windings and not too deep in the coil, then unwind the coil untill you get to the short and clean off the carbon with some fine emery paper and get some varnish from an armature winder and re wind the coil by hand. After all it is only a piece of wire wound around a former. Be sure to coat the coil thoroughly while you are winding it and then put it in the oven at a very low heat to cure. For a R4500 saving it's worth learning a new skill. If the problem is very deep in the coil then give it to an armature winder and he will re wind it for you for a couple of hundred rands. You may have to visit a few winders before you find someone who will do it for you because most of them think that the job is too small and fidly for them but persevere and you will get it right. I have revived many charging coils this way over the years and they have never given me any further problems. Good luck.

Thanks, one of the rivited plates came loose, damaging all the wiring on the coil. yes you guessed it........ENGINE OUT, fotunately landed safely in a ploughed field!! I would say it is beyond repair.
