WINDLASS WING PROBLEMS

Postby BOOMARANG » Wed Jan 13, 2010 6:20 am

I have a Windlass 582 (approved conversion) with a 15 sq meter Windlass wing. If I let go of the bar the aircraft immediately starts turning to the left and I have to fly with the bar about 20% of centre to keep it flying straight.

When checking the battens I found that the first 3 on the wingtips where different, the left 3 having a much flatter profile then the ones on the right. I changed the left ones to the right without adjusting the profiles to see if the trike would turn to the right, but it continued to turn left when I let go of the bar.

I cannot pinpoint the time that this has started to happen as it flew perfect when I bought it. The only change I have made to the wing is adjusting the hang point from its slowest to the fastest position. Anybody have any ideas?

Hi Boomarang

Have a look on the tube at the end of the leading edge , there are caps there that you can adjust to stop the wing pulling left or right. There is a line marked from the cap onto the Alluminium tube. These lines should be aligned if no one has adjusted the wing before. Just loosen the allen screw and turn the left one clockwise and the right one counter clockwise. This should help.

You can also get a batten profile plan to check the batten profiles.

Could be that your trike is trying to fly like a boomerang ?
Jokes aside, I agree with both the above fixes. It is in the Windlass manual on page 22.
If you don't have it, get one from Solowings with a batten chart for your wing.
The battens need to be checked from time to time, especially if you flew in turbulence
