Inflight electric trim op trike

Postby Gompou » Thu May 28, 2009 1:27 pm

Hi
Was klaarblyklik 'n BMW se kussing sin gewees.

Groete

As far as I know you get a type that effectively moves the hang-point forward and backwards electronically. I have seen a few local options like that.

The GT works in a different way. The wing is set up in a "fast" position, I presume with the hang-point more forward. The trim device is linked to a bungie cord which pulls the back of the wing down and results in the bar moving forward.

It depends if you are refering to the hang point trim or the wing profile trim . On the Airborne you have the speed trim that changes the profile of the wing trailing edge and that gives you around 5-8 knt increase in speed. It is a manual operation and works with a thin cable attached to cables running from the kingpost to the wing. By turning the wheel on the control bar you change the profile of the wing and that increases the speed. Works like a bomb (^^)

Groete
Barry

Saw this recently on a trike - electric system.

That looks simmilar to Aerotrike's system.

It reduces speed by reducing lift, and as a result the stall speed increases.
Quite correct. Hang gliders refer to this system as a VG (Variable Geometry). It is a system which either / or both pulls the spreader bar back (tightening the wing and altering the nose angle) and / or drops the reflex on the root battens through the luff lines. By dropping reflex (that strange curve at the back of your root battens) you release bar preasure, but your stall speed climbs, wing is more pitch sensitive and roll rate is a bitch. Negative side of landing with VG "on": Good possibility of a wing-up on landing.

The 450 "mechanically" increases / decreases bar pressure without altering the wing platform as opposed to the above. Negative side of landing with trim on fast: "big bar pressure".

I personally like both systems.

Both the VG and GT450 systems have their merit, but a combination (with type rating pilot training) would be an an even better system.

Should have added: With regards to pilots input, ease of control, and handling turbulence.

Hi

Dankie
