Local Aluminum sheet supplier ?

Postby DAK » Wed Apr 15, 2009 2:17 pm

Hi Guys
Anybody know where I can get 1mm aluminum sheet here in JHB ?
Alloy & Temper should be 6061-T6 (not sure if it's common).
Need to make some new reinforcing parts for my firewall.
Thanks

Hi

Very unlikely you will get 6061-T6 sheet in SA. Alclad (tel 011 6591317) at Lanseria will have 2024-T3 and will sell you whatever size piece you want. It is a superior grade to 6061-T6 and costs a bit more. You could also ask Placo to get you 6061-T6 from Aircraft Spruce. They stock a number of sizes down to 2ft x 4ft. Placo order weekly from Aircraft Spruce (on Thursdays) and delivery usually takes just a week.

Hi Guys
Thanks for the help ...
Aluninum trading Co has sheeting .. only 1050 alloy ... too soft
Placo has 2024-T3 sheeting but will only supply a 4X12ft sheet @ R2000 ... (**)
I only need about a square metre.
I asked Placo about ordering aircraft spruce products ... they were not keen at all ...
in fact not keen on doing business in general .... spoke to thier parts dept twice ?
Different guys ... same attitude ?
With that attitude I'd rather just order direct from Aircraft spruce ... can see what I want and order it
no hassle.

For Avex rivets I called Avloc in Boksburg .. the sales lady wanted to get the order ready
immediately for my collection ... they were keen to sell something ... vhpy

I'll phone Alclad tomorrow .... see if they are keen on business.
Thanks

Strange about Placo. I was there last week for some bolts and nuts - 2 eye bolts they didn't have - the guy ordered it right there on the online internet from aircraft spruce and it will be ready to collect in a week. Perhaps when you are there in person and they can let you pay on the spot is when the service is good.
Perhaps over the phone they don't know for sure you will take it and then they sit with stock ordered but not paid for?.

Hi Stephan
Do you remember who you spoke to ?
Maybe the other parts sales guys only make commission on their standard stock .. that's why
they are not keen to get stuff from Aircraft Spruce ?
It's worth a third attempt .... can see myself ordering lots of stuff going forward.
cheers

I never caught his name but when you walk in there, there are 2 guys or so in a front office and then a second office. He was in the 2nd office(through a doorway) first on the left hand(white guy). The guys in the front office(dark coloured) seemed to have no interest in helping me or anybody else and had a very 'slapgat houding'. I'll look on my invoices and see if there is a salesman name there. They are so close to alberton that it might be worth the drive.

Hi Dak,
I have had no problem with Placo at Lanseria and have ordered items from the Aircraft Spruce catalogue such as 4130 steel strips and 6061-T3 aluminium angles, as well as hardware that Placo do not carry. The Aircraft Spruce items are channeled through Hennie at Wonderboom. At least that is where he was when last I ordered.

Why not post some pics of your project and even the tools you make yourself to make the different parts. Some of us are actually interested in all these things. I love to work with my hands and a lot of the stuff that I know, I got from looking at other experts at work. And everyday is an learning experience.
