Radio noise

I have a noise on my radio as soon as i start the motor and then the other aircraft can not hear me talking.When the motor is switched of all is fine and every body can hear me again. I also found that when i plug out the 12v plug on the side of the radio the noise is also gone but the batt of the radio is on its end and only stays on for 10 sec. the radio is a Icom ic a20.

'generally' speaking that usually means you have a bad earth somewhere. Try a temporary wiring loom directly from the battery + and - and see if it goes away.

Hi,

This could put 13.7v into your radio meaning that you will be looking for a new one.

Get hold of ZULU1 - off the shelf power supply with built in RF choke - reasonably priced.

Got the same issue even after installing a power supply from ZULU1. He sent me a rf choke which I have not installed yet, so ask him to send the choke with from the start.

I am sure ZULU1 will read this, so another question: With the engine running I have a lot of static noise when listening to FAJS ATIS (I am at Springs) but the same static is not present when talking to other aircraft in the circuit.

I discoverd something under the dash it looks like two torch battery .There is writing on it LH.NOVA 10000UF 63V and they cost 50.00 rands eatch and it has two wires on eatch batt.

Boatch just read this, John Young sent me an email. Been in the lab for the week..not read the forum..

Paul has a VXA radio, normally no problems with a line choke regulator which we make, we set them for a VXA to 9,6 volts in. However some installations they collect rf on the power line. Not all cases though. we fit a rf bead close to the power in cable which nails it. We have needed about 4 in every hundred sold so far and the Vee rabbit fixes most rf ingress in any event with trikes. Massimo was another case..last year.

Paul you are collecting some other transmission by the sound of things. Let me know by email.

Boatch the two battery devices are capacitors, they should be located close to the power source, most factory made regulators are fitted with 22,000uf so these should be adequate. However they do not remove the interference that you have described. That is a very common noise and the only effective removal is with a line choke. I advise the wire wound type which are available from any "fast n furious store" auto store or from us. My advice is the bigger and shinier the better !!
The ICA 2 if i recall has a ANL fitted (they are extinct now and I havent seen one in years) this should also help. If upgrading I would advise the VXA220 and I understand that Solo on this forum has a new shipment just landed...

Or of course use a seperate battery. That always works !! Golden rule keep cables short as they are antennas. Less joints as possible.

Rf is a black art I am afraid and we learn every day. The installation is vert critical. I intend making a Vee rabbit for a cheetah to nail some enquiries that I have been getting..
