Exhaust

Postby Massimo » Mon Feb 23, 2009 5:13 pm

Hi guys,

I need to make mods to my exhaust system. Baffle and branches. Can anyone suggest a company in Jhb? Is there someone who actually goes out to site and takes the measurements etc?

Thanks
Cheers

Why don't you chat to Philip from Bundu Aviation. He did very good mods on his 801 & has the experience. If you want contact details let me know.

If you need some extra piping (that looks like a profile tube) let me know.

Is this for a 4 or 2 stroke. I wouldn't suggest messing around with two stroke exhausts

On my 912 I took the whole engine, engine mount and all, to Cowley Exhausts in CT. This way they could do a really neat installation. The 912 exhaust ships with a few lengths of tubing, two dounuts for the bends and the SIlencer

I understand,

The next option is put it on a trailor without wings and take it in to them. It is all Stainless steel so you really need someone with the right welders to do the job properly

It is absolutely worth it getting it done professionally

Hi Massimo,

On the subject of Cowley, there are a few local companies that are making automotive exhausts.
You could try TNT exhausts in Germiston. They do custom exhausts, tube bending, welding etc.
The other people you could try is Wild Cat. They also do fabrication, and had a very neat and tidy workshop. (well ... the last time I was in there years ago)

Maybe give them a try.

TNT Exhausts in Germiston (Knights actually) are definately the ones to go and see if you are looking for a four stroke exhaust system on a 912. I know of one they fitted to a CTSW that pushed the power up to around the 120 hp range and it was alot quieter than the standard exhaust. The owner needed to take the aircraft there to have it fitted to make sure everything fitted inside the cowling.

I had an enhaust made by Jeremy Pinkus for a Rotax 462 engine. Pushed the power from 51 hp (at sea level) to around 75 hp at 5500 ft (Calculation was done by Piter De Necker as he had to make the new prop) The fuel consumption dropped drastically to. He also does 4 stroke exhaust systems and his work is that of a perfectionist.

Exhaust sytems make far better improvements on 2 strokes than on 4 strokes but the standard exhaust on the 912 and 914 engines are so restrictive due to European noise constraints.

There was a company called R&D Aerosport in the States that could get the power up to 125 hp just by changing the exhaust system on the 912 but the noise test would never pass. (Dont think our AP's would even notice).
