I had one or two minor queries regarding my license renewal and found myself faced with the prospect of having to put a call into someone at RAASA. I had visions of switchboard telephones ringing without answer, buck-passing and all the other bureaucratic red-tape that in years gone by has led me to seek salvation with the wonderful Colette (at Van Zyl Aviation) when it came to any required dealings with CAA...

My despondent thoughts were interrupted by my call being promptly answered. In a flash I was through to the friendly Neil de Lange who patiently talked me through the correct forms and exactly where to find them on the RAASA website. I actually felt guilty for troubling him with such a menial query given that they must be pretty busy finding their feet with the establishment of RAASA, however, it seemed that nothing was too much trouble for Neil - not even a trifling form query!

There's been a lot of discussion and debate about RAASA in recent months, both in the aviation press and in forums such as this. I didn't have anything to contribute to those discussions, deciding instead that the "proof would be in the pudding..."

Well, I just had my first small spoonful and it is surprising good! (^^)

Good on you for giving credit where its due Dave. =D* =D* =D*
I also feel we should be positive and give the guys at RAASA the benefit of the doubt since things can only improve from here on out.

I just spoke to the nice people at RAASA about the grandfather clause wrt Light Sport Aircraft

If you are a current MPL of a plane that falls into the LSA catagory, i.e. over 450kg MAUW or over 260kg empty then you can simply apply for your Light Sport rating. This involves
1. a flight test
2. filling in the forms
3. R220 plus postage
4. 2 colour phodies, of yourself

NOTE: this must be done in the next 6 months. Otherwise thereafter you will have to do the conversion involving exams and extra lessons

I have a current Medical and MPL that is valid till 2010 (Blue book) for weight shift as well as 3-axis micro

I did a conversion onto a Cheetah 912S in Jan and mailed the type rating form to Licensing CAA (Randburg) along with a copy of my log book (showing hrs, School details etc.) beginning Feb.

Do I still need to apply for the LSA licence or will it automatically be converted next time I renew?

you need to apply but only after rating is captured by CAA otherwise the grandfather clause falls away

Hi Miskiet

Please contact me at 083 306 9980 tomorrow and I can help you with your NPL. We need to look on the CAA system to see what has been captured or not before being able to get a solution to this.
