Tornado at Contermanskloof

Postby CFD » Sun Aug 31, 2008 12:14 pm

Sad news to all in the flying community in Cape Town. The 25 year plus original home of the Western Cape Microlight Club was totally destroyed by a tornado at 6 PM Saturday eve. This brought huge tragedy to many members - every aircraft suffered damage, about 8 aircraft totally destroyed and the rest suffering varying degrees of damage. This sad event has brought an end to a great era that was a part of many of us here in the Western Cape

If ever in doubt about flying - drink a beer.
That will give you at least 8 hours to think about it some more.

Here's more pics

The most amazing thing is some received no damage next to others that were severely damaged

The little Red Challenger was in the hangar in the South West side of the field. It took the brunt of the storm, coming in for the SW. It, along with the hangar was blown right through the next set of hangars and ended up in the field a good 50m away. The wings were found another 100m away down in the valley. Next to this Challenger was the 701, partially damaged and next to it the Koala without engine, undamaged.

This is a very sad time...
I am very choked up, and my family can't understand the emotions and loss that I feel.
The Western Cape Microlight Club was the life and soul of flying in the Western Cape, and my heart goes out to everyone who lost aircraft.
