Microlighters

We are at the stage where descisions have to be made about the Animals choice of radio. JCVB has a second hand Micro Air with intercom. We have a few other options if we buy new. The Icom IC A200 IS looks quite attractive as does the 210. What radios do you guys have installed in your NTCA aeries & why did you choose your particular radio.

Generally hand helds, like the Vertex 220 or Icom A4,5 etc. saves on a radio station licence

Only until the apron police come to inspect. Then you are stuffed. Guys you must have a radio station license if you are able to transmit, even for a handheld. The only reason CAA do not enforce it, is that it can be removed from the aircraft and thus does not have an identifier... (ie ZU-RVF)

Strangely, when I applied for the extension on the PFA, CAA asked me if I had a hand held and then told that's fine, no need for a radio station licence. This was 2 weeks ago

No need to produce it at CAA for them to issue ATF, but you still need a radios station license. Not serious, but just beware the the new ramp police will ground you if you can not produce a radio station license for your aerie...

What I have done is I have a license for my handheld in my name and I just transfer this from plane to plane (just in case)

Me and Big Mac couldn't get ATF in March this year, and we had hand helds. I was told at CAA I needed a radio station license irrespective of, can't remember the reason. I drove there and then to ICASA in Sandton, got one for me and one for Big Mac, ATF followed an hour later. They actually charged Big Mac pro rata back for 2007 from the time he purchased his Thunderbird.


I upgraded to a Microair - GREAT radio - can reccommend it any time.

R48 / year is the least of your worries. Would gladly swap radio license & hangarage any day! The ICA 200 is a great radio, plenty of power, frequency preselect, built in intercom and looks good!. Costs more than a handheld though!

The ICOM ica 200 is no longer in production. Replaced by the superior Icom ICA 210. I fitted a couple of ICA 210`s, and it is a LOT of radio for the price. The intercom is magic. Do not think twice; BUY IT

Got a 200 that was blown now repaired...

Go for the 210 - Excellent value for money, great transmission especially with Zulu1's aerials!

Yebo for the i210. Please may we have more info on Zulu1's aerials? (Maybe under technical or classifieds).
