Hi Everyone. I would like to introduce myself to the list after lurking for some time now. After a fairly long gestation period, ZU-JIM took to the skies. She is a CGS Hawk with a Jabiru 2200 motor. I believe that this a first anywhere, so it was with great nervousness that we watched her getting airborne two weeks ago with Dave Austin at the controls. The MGL Enigma instrumentation may be slightly overkill for a microlight, but the ability to monitor all the engine parameters for the test flights is really helpful. I have now set up the black box monitoring as well so that all engine and flight parameters can be downloaded after each flight to tweak the engine/prop combo. My greatest concern was that the CHT's would be too high, after reading various(old) reports on the internet about Jabiru's in pusher configuration. The first few flights have shown all temps within limits, although we had to remove the scoop on the oil cooler after the first flight as the oil temp was too low. Some tweaking of prop and carb is needed to get the EGT's perfect throughout the RPM range. All in all she flew beautifully and is really nice and quiet. Now all we need is to fly off the 40 hours CAA called for. And find hangarage which seems to be a huge problem everywhere.

Thanks Tailspin. I'm on my way out to the field now to do some tweaking. As soon as I have some useful figures I'll post them.

ZU-JIM is hangared along with my old Basic 4000 at Vogel Valley, close to Bot River, as Jpage said. What an honour for me!
I had the fantastic opportunity to be pax in JIM for a 85 mile flight to Swellendam recently. Looking over Dave Austin's shoulder, I noticed that we were doing 95 mph IAS at full power. The Jab-eng was just purring like a kitten, smooth and responsive.
I must say that the Jab engine in the Hawk seems like a perfect combination. Got a helluva nice aerie Jpage--enjoy it!
