TBO on 503

Postby Ou Man » Thu Jan 31, 2008 12:43 pm

Can anybody give me the names and contact detail of individuals/ companies in the Western Cape that can legally do a TBO on a 503 without charging me an arm and a leg.

If the web site is up to date, the only WC place able to legally do it:

Company: Stellair cc
Contact: John Navarro
Location: Stellenbosch Airfield
Tel: 021 880 0234
E-mail: stellair@mweb.co.za

Can't answer if they take body parts in exchange for the work performed

There are a number of AP's, Johan Froneman and Tommi Coupe. Tommi lives up the west coast at Yserfontein and comes to you. Johan is at Saldanha Airfield

Tommi 083 three96 18two6
Johan 082 four57 95ohnine

Link Engineering have done this in the past, not sure if they have AMO status. Ask Joye Newby, 083 two61 07ohseven

That raises a point. Does it have to be an authorised Rotax service centre to qualify as having been properly overhauled?

Some potentially bad news for those that were doing the 'TBO' re-builds in the past.

When speaking to Mike Cathro yesterday he also indicated that AP's signing out aircraft that have exceeded the 300 hours without thecrank change are going to be investigated and most probably have their rating revoked.

True, the people we know and trust might actually not be legal anymore. If they have at any time in the past signed off on a engine over 300 hours and with the same crank, CA are going to hunt them down and take them out.

True,

If this topic was created to be legal under new part 24, I don't think that you have to TBO your 503 anymore. It is not necesary for the 503 according rotax maintenance manual, anyway only the crank part, don't know about rest.

Funny thing happened today. I was doing a bit of maintenance on my plane, and I couldn't believe my eyes. All the maintenance appeared during dec 2007 on my logbook. What a surprise??

The weekend was interesting indeed- nowhere in the Rotax 503 maintanance does it state that you have replace the crank of a 503 - Inspect at 300 hours !
I challend the CAA dudes and queried the Rotax agency who confirmed
-The 582 does call for a crank change at a general engine overhaul .
maintance wise a great debate will arise im sure - I have an Ap rating that allows engine rebuild as does my ROTAX CERIFICATE -
I smell a rat , a big stinky one , I just wonder who runs some AMOs and who is employed by the government ???
Maybe we should look at unfair competition - ????
My thoughts for the weekend

Hi Rudi , this is serious stuff , we live in a new , well abused corrup South Africa where everything is supposed to be transparent , but is it ??
I think not , I just wonder who and why were involved with the "newAP" scheme??- and why the sudden urge to employ new inspectors - why the sudden change in attitude - and why the sudden policing of the "new Rules"
Why are our Aero club / Misasa repair rating questioned - why is the Rotax course a little bit "light" - youre supposed to do the "heavy " maintance course - ................
just makes me think , we are trapping on some toes - are the AMOs not able to survive ? and why was there a sudden urge to open AMOs country wide a year or two ago - the rat is growing and real fast too !
Case rested once again.

Leprechaun, the info that I have is that it was mainly the AMEs at the AMOs that were chopped from the AP list. So if anything there are less AMOs now that are rated to do the work.

Hmm the thot plikkens :?

I would like to know how many 503 owners actually spent money incorrectly replacing cranks every 300 hours :?:
