Legalities of building a hangar

What are the legalities of building a hangar on a farm (private) airstrip. Does it need to be registered/approved/etc by the CAA? Are there regulations I need to know of?
The farm is adjacent to an airstrip belonging to a town (population 500). The town leases the strip to another farmer for cropspraying activities. Neither the farmer who leases the strip, nor the town have any objections to a hangar being erected on the farmer's (whose land is adjacent to the strip) land.
Any advice will be appreciated?

Just build the thing big enough for our trikes as well. We want to come and braai teen die berg and eat by the German with the sore foot.
Kom nou Gert, moenie speel nie. Bou een moerse hangar.

Hello Gert

I think you would need to get permission for the strip from Langebaan Approach or CAA since you fall within FAD 46. As far as the hangar goes, with Morning Star there are no specific CAA requirements unless you want to register the airfield as FAMS, however we do have municipal and fire prevention requirements because we are on Municiple ground.

I am sure you dont need anything for the building. Do you think ANYBODY had a say in the little hanger at Altona? Or that anybody cares? If the farmer is happy, all should be fine. Thats my 5 cent opinion. Thats all you need basically. Something like that.

Thanks. Will find out but this is under the FAD46
If it is on the farm surely the normal town planning does not apply?

Doesn't FAD 46 extend from ground to 2000ft? Do you have to call Langebaan before your flights?

Can't see a hangar being any relevance to CAA.
If you're not on municipal ground, just call it a shed and slot into the requirements of the cropduster when using the strip.

Theoretically you are correct but the FAD46 is not in use. At the moment they tell you to broadcast TIBA below 1500ft.
To make sure I spoke to Gerhard Nel, the ATC in charge there, and he said it is not a problem, but asked that I inform them in writing about my plans.

Hi Gert
I suggest you get in contact with the local municipality and just make sure you have everything sorted with them as there are some regulations that you might need to follow as you will be storing something in that big shed.

With efficiency sadly lacking elsewhere in South Africa, I received a response to my faxed letter to Langebaanweg within 2 hours (see Lt Col Grobler's explanation of rules and regulations attached).
No, I will be in Aurora over weekends and in the week, if I can get away. The idea is that I will fly to Aurora, and if I am stranded because of weather, I will have a car there to drive back to Morningstar. Want the hangar for those occasions.

Not only did I get a quick reply to my letter to Langebaanweg, I also got a phone call from Maj Q de Klerk inviting me to visit Langebaanweg to see how they operate. I told him I will get back to him, knowing that others in the Western Cape would want to join me. Anyone interested?
