Anyone on here fly RC?

Postby RV4ker (RIP) » Tue Aug 07, 2007 7:35 pm

I have recently “rediscovered” RC after a 20 year layoff. Looks like I be building that RV after all.

This one should fly soon (obviously in red)

I last flew control line "Baby Bee" planes a bit more than 20 years ago. I am thinking of getting back into flying model planes but, after looking at some of the planes the guys on AVCOM are flying, I think a microlight is cheaper.
You building a real balsa model! I am proud of you. What trainer did you start with?

Yip. Some of the "old" hands have some serious toys. The Ultimate for R50K    , but if you in it for fun in can still be had relatively cheaply and the variety is now huge where in past it was pretty limited. (20 years ago anyway)

I love the balsa scale models. I built plenty in 80's which I never flew for fear of Crash. Maybe this time

I splashed out on 7 ch radio as I would like to get into the woer woers at some stage which was a little extravagant and expensive. I love second hand so the trainer is a Donimo which I got for R1000 (after 4 flights guy decided to go Woer Woer instead) all in and I borrowed FSOne to practise. The sim is worth weight in gold, but it is EXPENSIVE (R1700)..... Mate has real flight G3, but I have not yet tried it.

I also inherited a Wing Dragon(?) which the local club guys all learnt to fly on. (some have now modified theirs with brushless outrunners and serious batteries to improve performance). It a plastic and foam job which is very light of the controls and spare parts are readily available and cheap. I put it into the ground vertical from about 15ft and they had it back in the air in 15 mins.....   It is also fully aerobatic and includes everything needed to fly for R1,000.
Image
John at Sharkies (http://www.sharkysparkflyers.co.za/cata ... ucts_id=30) was great, but they are avaiable from most RC shops (and even the odd "China Shop" littering the country side)

IMHO good buy if you just want to check it out, but be careful, when the bug bites it gets expensive quickly. One of the guys started flying 6 months ago and 13 flying models and 4 on the table in various stages of completion... Surf the web     Things have changed (and got expensive), but it is a whole lotta fun and I am hoping my kids will enjoy it like I did...

2c.......

PS
FMS is also a freebie sim on net. Can get cable to interface with USB for R100. Not tried it yet, but am told it will work even with the wing Dragon radio, so for R1200 you can have a plane, radio, sim etc.... That not bad in my book....

Hi Funtana

Welcome to the Forum...

Thanks for the offer, but I don't have an aerie in JHB to train on, thus the sim. I put in a bid on Bidorbuy (me and send hand's    ) for a stick trainer complete, but it has mysteriously vanished off the site. As soon as I can get aerie up in Jhb I be sure to look you up.

PS
I am working on a development in the NW province at the moment. The aerie is too big to fit into the RV for me to cart to andfrom Jhb, so I leave it in the office in Vryburg and try to arrange the various site meetings around the club flying on Wed afternoon (Man I hate it when business gets in the way...). Problem is I have not been as successful in my time management and have missed a couple lesson opportunities.   I am killing the Alpha trainer on the sim though, but it plenty different out there....

Hi RV4ker

I'm also playing with the small stuff. Most scary one is the Raptor 90. :D Next in line is my Arrow trainer followed by the quick and nippy little Giles 202

Suggestion: Look like there are a lot of microlighters flying rc planes/helis... Would be nice if we could add a folder under General on this forum for discussion of rc related stuff.

Dish first fly the real one as the radio one will teach you bad habbits, like inverted flight.
