Hangarage in Cape Town

desperate for a hangar for the end of the month...

FAFK has become ridiculously expensive and handed in notice that I will be leaving. So need somewhere to put the trike. It will not be flown for two months so at the back of a hangar with the wing off is fine. Until I can find a permanent home for my precious

P.S> Moderators: maybe this should be under wanted but this is HANGAR TALK

Hi Biggles,

Just out of curiosity: how much is "ridiculously expensive"? Over here at the Highveld hangarage seems to range from R350 - R500 p/m. Would be interesting to compare.

Regards,

Henni

I am not sure, but i think FAFK is charging in the excess of R700-00 per month at the moment.
For that you will have to shift a couple of aeries around to get yours out. There is not much facilities like toilets, kitchen, water to wash planes etc.
To get electricity to your plane could also be a problem in some hangers.
NOTHING else allowed in hangers....only the plane. I wanted to put my trike trailer in a corner when I was there, but then understood i would have to pay hangerage for that as well then.
You do get a HUGE runway though.

At Wintervogel we pay half that amount, dont touch another aerie when you want to fly, brand new hangers, electricity, neon lights, clubhouse, brand new toilets, shower facility, fridges in the hanger, kettles, your own cupboard for all the flying equipment and whatever you can get into the space thats given to you, you can park there. Theres even washing bays for the trikes!
We even got fridges stocked with beers, cold drinks, chips, chocolates etc. You take what you want, check the price on the door, and just put the money in a glass bottle and off you go!
And to top it all, you will battle to find a nicer bunch of guys to hanger and share the facilities with.. THATS now apart from the guys in my hanger. I dont know why I must always be so unlucky. ( NOU gaan ek verseker gebliksem word! ) :>>

Will not change that for anything alse soon!!!!

Oom Andries is looking well after us, thats for sure.

Hi Bacchus,

I have to agree, for that fee I would also look for something else! Great to hear about the nice bunch & facilities at Wintervogel. I'm still trying to find same over here but Rhinopark is not too keen on having me

Keep well,

Henni

Why does FAFK charge so much. The average rate is 350 - 500 so anyone charging 700 should be out of business. Whats so speacila out there

Bacchus how many trikes/planes are hangered at Winervogel?

FAFK is 630 rand for the hangar I am in... apparently they differ.

One justification for the previous increase was security. They do have CCTV on the hangars now. There is water, but its at the other hangar.

FAFK has wonderful runways 05, 23, 14, and 32. They are currently pulling the weeds out of 36 and 18. For a trike its nice not having to land cross-wind. They are about 50m wide aswell. It's an old airforce field obtained under various nefarious means for very little money in the bad old days. The current owner is after the big bucks, not interested in promoting avaition. Its such a pity as the field is way better than any other private field in the CT area.

I have had no problems there and quite sad to have to leave but cannot justify the geld.

Agree with Biggles. I dont think the owners of the flight schools there have much say in the rates of the hangers. They rent the field from the owner, and if he wants more bucks, the flights schools must follow.
There is huge grounds available for more hangers, but even if you want to put up a hanger at your own cost, its a no go! So the owner I think does not really care about aviation in general.
As far as it looks like there is also not really any improvements/ development of any kind going on there.

To answer the previous question, we are about 15 trikes and 4 blik aeries there at Wintervogel. Give or take a few, I never really counted. Private hangers on a beautiful farm just outside the northern suburbs of CApe Town ( Durbanville ) en route to Malmesbury.

I have a few numbers, thanks for those that have given me numbers to call.

Yup, its the owners not Louis that set the rates. The owners also have claimed hangars that they did not build and charge rent for them . that is why there is no developement, build a hangar then have it rented back to you...
