Microlighters

My Quicksilver MXII arrived Sunday morning after an epic and adventurous journey from Bapsfontein in less than ideal conditions. Thanks to Henni and his son (I don't think I thanked you guys properly in all the excitement) for flying it through. Ever seen a microlight hover? This one can

Unfortunately in the excitement I did not have much time to take pics but will remedy soon. She's a beauty (to me anyway).

Congratulations :D I once saw CDF, (who has since downgraded to a home built Bush Baby), hover and then fly gently backwards in one of our Cape breezes. He claims he was doing it on purpose

Yes, the very last leg of the flight was something that I'll never forget. At one moment I had to cut the throttle right back to idle with the control stick full forward against the stop, sitting in a 30 degree nose high and climbing attitude which refused to change, fearing for a tail slide should the updraught suddenly let go (very, very strong updraughts) - the very next moment saw full power which at time seemed to fail to get me out of the strong descending condition caused by very strong downdraughts. Not once during the very last leg could I find a compromise between these two extreme conditions.

Normally when landing, the strong gusts would let go just before actual touch down - not so yesterday, I had to fight it every milimeter right down to full stop on the ground.

I will not forget yesterday's flight for a long time to come. The last time I experienced similar conditions was over the ex Vanderbijlpark airfield. When I managed to get my MX1 back on the ground, two immigrants, who were watching all of this, approached me. One presented an outstretched hand to me and said: "Congratulations, that was the best aerobatic display I've ever seen performed in a microlight!" I explained to him that it was no aerobatic display, but me fighting for my life to get back on the ground!

Nothing worse than being in the air & wishing you were down on the ground.

I had this experience between Petit and Springs a few years back, luckily my pax was an ML pilot too. Eish .

I'm curious - have you started flying her yet? If not (weather not good), do you plan to get started this weekend? Seems like we've got excellent flying weather ahead for this weekend for a change.

I'm rather keen to hear your impression of the MXII types. (Seeing that you already have experience with the trikes.)

Not yet! Still doing the paper thingie. Will also have to put in a small mod or two for my legs. She passed the inspection by an AP, now to CAA to get Authority to Fly, registration, organise insurance etc. Will be out at the airfield tomorrow to do a couple of small things and wash her!
Can't wait to start though. Will take a pic for microlighters.co.za.
Don't think the weather's going to be that great this weekend. Forecast sounds (and looks) quite dismal.
You can be sure I'll let you know as soon as I've flown!!!! :D :D :D

Yes, I ashamedly must admit, she needs a good wash desperately. Difficult to do over at where I hangar for the moment. I'm afraid that the Mizer will soon look very similar.

Happy to hear she passed her inspection with ease. Hope your paperwork is sorted out soon.
