shumba from the air
We left Thurs morning and were faced with 35 mph head winds.
Had to make an extra stop at Bethlehem in those cross winds

and decided to leave the planes there for the night.
Collected them the next morning and the rest of the week and weekends weather made up for the bad thursday weather

you can see it is a one way in and out,
most of the time it was a tail wind out unless early morning or evening so it was only 1 up for the rest of the times
You have to come in around the mountain and when taking off turn out right before the mountain

there is a castle being built on top of a mountain nearby that is going to be turned into a spa resort. It will also hve it own runway on top of the mountain
Right on the border - on the left hand side is Lesotho and on the right is RSA
If anyone is looking for a weekends fly away Shumba is great with lots to do with the family as well if the weather turns bad or during the day
Sorry the pics are not great but I dont shoot well while I fly
Hopefully some of the others will post some more

Hi Aerosan
My time for the longest leg was 2,2 hours and that was the leg from Crosswinds to Heilbron. Interestingly on the return trip I completed that leg in 1,8 hours.

And here's some more :D
How's this for wind, this was early Thursday AM, it progressively picked up to around 35MPH around Bethlehem on the outbound leg.. You see us Gautees are not used to Mr Wind..
Some pilots (Rob and Jaco) with Mr Captain.
We left our aeries at Bethlehem (very nice folk) for the evening, then tackled these mountains the next AM - beautiful flight !
2 trikes and a T-Bird in formo..
Clarens was 'pay back time' for the groundcrew... Dont know what was more painful, almost inverted flight or shopping with 'tourist' pricing...
The owners of Shumba Valley farm, Bob and Di were treated to a flip by Gareth (CFI at DAC)
Thunderboy teaching his young passenger how to refuel...
Heilbron airfield is now grazing ground for cattle and a local driving/parking training ground...
The "Crosswinds Gang" at Ficksburg airfield
Great fun ! great company !
Cheers ian

yes, I guess the name 'Shumba Valley farm' could be misleading, there is no canned hunting there, only horse out rides, quad bikes and hiking
Cheers ian
