On Saturday morning I went to the airfield. I was supposed to take Skidmark for a flip in his Challenger (waiting to complete his 3-axis conversion). His wireless headset was playing up and we didn't get to fly. While I was standing around CLU-less arrived back with his trike.
Now the trikes in our hanger are loaded up onto triangular trollies and pushed in sideways. There are metal ramps an each side of the trolley for the rear wheels. Once the trike is pushed onto the trolley the weight of the wheel causes the metal ramp to pivot forward, lifting the back and dropping the front
As they got the front wheel onto the trolley, the trolley moved sideways. I pushed it back using my foot (wearing sandals at the time) and held it in place while they got the back wheels loaded. What I did not notice is my foot was directly below the ramp. As the trike ramp started pivoting forward my toe was caught between it and the metal below, crushing the tip. I had what felt like the whole weight of the trike on my toe
I said something like "excuse me CLU-less old boy, would you mind removing you lovely trike from the trolley so that I can recover my toe"
Fortunately I had a medical kit in my car and I managed to doctor myself with a very concerned CLU-less looking on.
Lessons learned, preflight the trolley before using it and keep your feet away from offending objects.
