Hey all, perhaps a silly idea but a thought I had when I read the post on the fire at cato , so figured why not throw it out and see...........How about a "Microlighters.co.za Helpmekaar Insurance club". .......details of what is covered etc and to what amount can be worked out, members each pay their R1-200 pm into the kitty.sort of a repairs stockvel? Have a small commitee to run it?
I have zero idea as to legalities etc, just an idea. ........

I am just as devastated as you are, my last plane CEW i had insurance that covered it "whilst not under its own power" as I took it to Mozambique a lot..ie trailer damage, theft etc. and it was really cheap they charged the same as a caravan I think..
I am phoning our brokers in the next hour..maybe we have some insurance gurus on the forum..must be somewhere??

About a year ago, a chap by the name of Johan Nel from Natal (not to be confused with Johann Nel from Klipriver airfield) was doing some research on something like this.

He had a questionnaire that he was sending out, I got one and filled it in and sent it back. What it basically involved was gathering info he required to build up a database of sorts. Once the whole scheme got a certain "critical mass" it could be deemed viable. Anyway, I have heard nothing since - did anyone else hear what happened ???

I am in a partnership and we have a Windlass, we decided to insure it in case one partner has a flying accident, avoiding leaving the other partners sitting with part shares in a wreck. We also have cover whilst on the trailer as well as when hangared. There is only one Insurance Co doing trikes/microlights so it seems and yes, it does cost 6 - 8 % of the hull value per annum.

There is a whole two page article on this subject in the latest afskies mag by Graham Speller. They did a survey on this forum in Aug and Sept "I think". Sad thing is that only 114 people responded. Check it out it should be somewhere on this forum.

Yes, maybe a bit of a wakeup call for those who do not (albeit reluctantly, like me) have insurance. Hopefully Mr Speller will come up with a package that does not cost that much (even if it does not cover that much). A pity that only a tenth of microlighters responded to the survey.

I wanted to but it asked for plane reg, and I didn't have one at the time

Guys, all ground risks cover is not that expensive (Meaning you are covered on the ground but not if you bend the airy on landing) - I am insured with Dennis Jankelow and Ass. Service is extremely professional. You pay a once off for a year's cover, when I changed airy's I did not have to take out a new policy, the details of the aircraft was merely changed.

Phone them now and you will be insured by this afternoon, it is worth it!

hey BigD, does that cover include, hanger theft , fire (those pics of Cato are heartbreaking)etc? What is approx cost, based on a % of cover I suppose?

I pay less than R3k per year (can't remember exact amount) for R100k airy.

Not that money will be able to replace Precious, but at least I then have a pay-out towards the next airy should the hanger burn down (touch wood)

3K on 100K is 3% pa !!! I think some of the blik aeries pay that almost all inclusive depending on experience. Saw something on Avcom about it. I still think we are being screwed. RV4ker might have more info, I think it was his post...
