Old vs. New

Postby slysi » Tue Nov 21, 2006 1:21 pm

I came across these pictures of trikes on airliners.net. It is an interesting comparision to see where the sport has come from. It would be great to hear some stories from the folk that have been involved in the sport for some time....it must have been a totally different kettle of fish to fly those old aeries :!:

In the early days

Postby John Young » Tue Nov 21, 2006 4:17 pm

In the early days, a fly away from Cato Airfield to Table Mountain was a weekend trip. Skottels, braais, beers and tents were loaded onto trikes and flown the princely distance of 6 miles for an overnight camp.

It is very interesting talking to the guys who helped pioneer trike flying.

Hi Scribbletjies,

There indeed exists a very rich heritage from the early days of trike flying.

Single ignition, no radios, loose procedures, multiple incidents [almost on a weekly basis], massive humour and leg-pulling etc.

Fascinating having a chin-wag with the old timers around a fire listening to them recount story after story … although sometimes it may be necessary to wear a bullsh#t filter … never quite sure where reality becomes fiction …

There are plenty of vintage photos around Cato Airfield from open days etc.
