Hi guys, can someone assist. I started my PPL in 2004 and completed the medical. I have now started flying Trikes and seen my medical was only valid for 2 years. My understanding was it would be valid for 5 years?

I depends on medical conditions and age

normally it is valid for 5 years if you are under 40 and healthy and 3 years if you are over 40 and healthy. However if you have any health issues such as hypertension, lung problems etc etc the medical examiner can shorten the duration down to the period required between tests. i.e. if you need to have a lung xray evey 12 months for what ever reason then your medical will be valid for this period.

Your licence is valid for 2 years or as long as you have a valid flight medical.

Go to http://www.caa.co.za click on Aviation Medicine, and open the Designated Aviation Medical Examiners Guide and look at chapter 67.00.6

Oh yes and the other thing, for trike flying as with all microlights your medical required is a class 4. The class 2 medical for PPL is only valid for 2 years under 40 and 1 yesr over 40
