Microlighters

Hi Folks,

This being my first post on the boards(regular reader from a distance), I hope you don't mind me bringing the following bit of microlight related news from Europe.

Jay Madhvani and David Armstrong will be attempting to beat the benchmark record of 7 days between England and Cyprus set by Brian Milton on his around the world in 80 days flight in 1998. Their original target departure date was meant to be today, 3rd September 2006 however, this has needed to be delayed until Tuesday 5th September.

Jay and Dave attempted this flight in 2001 but failed and are hoping to lay their personal demons to rest by successsfully completing this journey within 6 days.

Not only are they hoping to beat Brian's record, but also, they will be raising funds for charity. They have setup a website at http://www.england-to-cyprus.co.uk.

where visitors will be able to keep up to date on their progress. A daily updating map can be viewed and also a blog that will be updated from time to time during the day with news and photographs. They came up against bad weather, high winds and bureacracy in the past and are not discounting the same to happen again; only this time, they are better prepared. Their route will take them from England to France, over the Alps into Italy, then onto Greece and Cyprus - easier typed than done i'm sure.

Jay has chosen to raise funds for the Starlight Neonatal Ward at Barnet General Hospital and Dave has chosen the Margarita Liasidou School for Handicapped Children based in Paphos, Cyprus. They have made a donations facility available on the website and hope that the public can be generous for these very worthy causes.

I was born and spent most of my life in South Africa until moving to England a few years ago. It was only last year that I had the opportunity to do my NPPL(M) [as it is called here] and love the joy I receive from flying.

Hi Folks,

For those interested, Jay & David did eventually get away on Friday
morning and are currently overnighting in Albertville on the French side
of the Alps after 2 days flight.

They have had slow going with groundspeeds of down to 30mph which is not
promising for their attempt at the record, though they admit that
daylight hours are shorter and will make it harder as they go south,
especially if cloud cover affects them as it has done over the past
days.
