Mozambique Tofo

Postby trikemad » Mon Jan 09, 2017 9:43 am

Hi guys and girls
I thought i would just write a little about my trip to Moz with my trike ZU-CTB, firstly I work for the airplane factory as a test pilot and thus i believe if its more than a 30 min walk we fly. we decided to take our annual break in Tofo and I and I had no intention of driving as i would fly one of our company Sling 4 aircraft down, kinda a no brain-er when one considers its a 18 hour drive opposed to a 3.3 from wheels off to touch down.I managed to convince a family member that it was a good idea to tow my trike to Tofo and promising them a fantastic view they agreed. Now the nitty gritty part which I am all to aware of and been discussed here before, permits, permissions etc, well I will tell you that this whole thing was a non event, I am a member of the Inhambane flying club, I might add that they have 250 plus members of which not one owns a plane. I thus contacted our chairman Alveres and he set out to obtain the flight clearances and had it in hand in a week, This included operating almost most of the coastline below 1000ft NOTAM issued, I also went to the maritime office and purchased a permit to operate off the beach, also no big deal part 24 permit was issued at 5000 mets and the rand being 5.4 to 1 it was cheap and valid for 115 days. After 35 plus hours of flying off the beach and the most amazing sights i packed up and headed home. I think what i am trying to say here guys is Moz is a beautiful place to fly, they dont hate aviation and actually love it, I would happily help anyone considering a trip up there with permissions and contacts.
break down:
1) permissions bottlte of wiskey
2) permit for beach part 24 5000 mets R925 valid 115 days
3) landing and takeoff at Inhambane 800 mets R148
4) trike 4 weeks on beach (ill discuss that another time but well worth it
5) whole experience- PRICLESS!!!!!
I will end off by telling you the hardest thing and that was convincing the guys at Inhambane FQIN that the plane(Trike) left the airport by air and never arrived by air, they could just not understand the concept of it being on a trailer and that it was parked on the beach, The system could not understand that, a bottle of rum solved that problem and all was good. My trike is on its way back from Moz today and will have to do a full tear-down and rebuild but oh so worth it.
when i figure out how to down size pics ill post them.....
cheers Sean Russell

Hi T.M.

I would also like to thank you for sharing your wonderful experience with us. What I would like to know is where did you you hangar your trike or did you just tie her down underneath the coconut trees, and what accommodation facilities are available?

Hi, I collapsed the wing at night, flat on beach and put shade cloth over it, When the weather was bad i flew it back to FQIN and put it in the aero-club hangar at R50-00 per day. I have a few contacts for accommodation and will happily forward the details, please drop me a email at sean@airplanefactory.co.za.

Awesome! FYI, you do not need to downsize pics at all, the forum does it for you. You can upload the high resolution and it will thumbnail it automatically, you can click the thumbnail for the hi res pic.
