Action Cameras

Postby swartkat » Tue Nov 15, 2016 5:11 pm

Hi guys,

what kind of action cameras do you use to make your flight movies?

After my GoPro didn't survive a 15th floor fall i am in the market for a new one.

I saw that TomTom (if I remember correctly) has now a camera with GPS tracking and also speed/G measuring and is much cheaper then goPro.

I would love to track my flights in the video (with a small fade-in of a map).

Currently I use my BadElf gps tracker for this.

Is there maybe any other cameras that can do this?

cheers

Look at the Garmin Virb camera, much cheaper than the GoPro especially the older version & has onboard GPS. New version more expensive but can also be used down to 40m underwater with no additional housing.
Garmin Virb also has an adpater to use all your GoPro fittings from the deceased GoPro. vhpy

TomTom: Action Cameras

I got the TomTom.
I bought it because the tests on the net weren’t bad and Amazon had a 50% special offer.
I already own an action pro (comparable in quality to the older Gopro) for a couple of years, but the remote control did not work any more.
Well, there are always pros and cons. Let us start with the pros:
- Quality of the gear and the parts are good.
- Can handle sun light and darkness much better than the old one
- Prop shutter effekt almost gone
- Has remote control and apple app connection for remote access
- Video quality is very good
- Has adapter to use Gopro mounts
- Camera is water resident itself.
- Clever mounting for recording upside down or in any angle.
- Batterie pack records almost 1,5 hours before getting flat
- Batterie pack is exchangeable and easy to change (I bought a second pack)
- SD slot is located in the Batteriepack and therefore by changing the Batt, pack SD card card can be changed without hassle and danger of loosing this little buggers in the dirt somewhere.

Cons:
.
- Gps only used for speed/G measuring. Positioning recording only while on photo mode
- GPS does not record positioning track while on video mode
- Getting the Apple app to find and control the camera is sometimes difficult and unreliable

Here is a flying video https://vimeo.com/177954645 (quality is reduced by vimeo, original is much better) taken with the camera inside the plane and attached outside on the front wheel (cut together from two different flights).
But it shows that the camera can handle difficult light quite well.

In the second video the TomTom is mounted inside the cockpit only, and the Action Pro is mounted on the wing (taking off from Azul)
But the sun was very bright that day and the UAV index was high.

In the third video the TomTom is mounted inside the cockpit only, but it was late afternoon, cloudy and the sun was setting.

For the price I paid I am quite happy, but I miss the GPS tracking. I think the GPS feature advertised by the company is misleading and quite useless.
