Aerobatic Box WEST of Kitty Hawk 01/19

Postby John.com » Thu May 05, 2016 9:22 am

I picked this up on AVCOM and so wanted to alert all MLers flying into Kitty Hawk.

I suggest reading the full post on AVCOM (New Registered Aerobatic Box at Kitty Hawk) to get a full understanding of the impact of the aerobatic box on your arrival and departure from Kitty Hawk.

In short, an aerobatic box has been registered on the WEST side of the airfield, which affects the approach to Kitty Hawk, particularly from the western side.

Pilots have been warned NOT to join on the DEAD side (west) of the airfield due to the location of the aerobatic box, which abuts the airfield on the west. From AVCOM post: "We suggest that pilots flying in for landing remain to the Eastern side of the runway at all times."

Pilots appoaching Kitty Hawk should listen out on both 120.65 MHz and 125.40 MHz (Johannesburg Special Rules East)

The following was copied from AVCOM (New Registered Aerobatic Box at Kitty Hawk), with a few grammatical edits:

Local Traffic Regulations for Kitty Hawk
(1) Runway 01 : Right-hand circuits
(2) Runway 19 : Left-hand circuits.
(3) Pilots to broadcast their intentions on 120,65 MHz Kitty Hawk Traffic when east of the Waterkloof CTR.
(4) Join overhead 6100 ft
(5) Approach for 01 - Be aware of turbulence and down-drafts/wind shear.
(6) Keep a look out for guinea fowl and buck on the airfield.
(7) Be alert to occasional aerobatic practice on the western side.
(8) Helicopter parking marked H on the northern side of the aerodrome.
(9) Poor radio communication between holding point RWY 01 and 19 at times.
(10) Approach for 01 with crosswind from west - suggest deep landing where possible.

The following notice was taken off the Kitty Hawk website:

AEROBATIC BOX - Important notice:

All pilots flying around Kitty Hawk, please take note that the Aerobatic Box on the Western side of Kitty Hawk is active most Saturdays and often during the week.

Should there be any aerobatic activities, do not fly overhead to descend on the Western side as this will conflict. We suggest that pilots flying in for landing remain to the Eastern side of the runway at all times.

For Pilots routing overhead please listen out on 120.65 and also remain East as the height of the box can extend up to Fl 090 on certain days.

All aerobatic flights will broadcast their intention (if possible) on 125.40 during the climb. Only SAC members with valid aerobatic ratings are able to make use of the aerobatic box as per the Rules and Regulations of the SAC.

This schematic allows you contextualise the aerobatic box at Kitty Hawk.
Kitty Hawk Aerobatics Box + 0.5nm Safety Buffer.jpg
The coordinates of four corners of the 0.5nm buffer zone around the Kitty Hawk aerobatic box are as follows:

Kitty Hawk Aero Box Safety Zone SW Corner
25°52'56.63"S 28°25'24.17"E

Kitty Hawk Aero Box Safety Zone NW Corner
25°50'30.30"S 28°25'15.48"E

Kitty Hawk Aero Box Safety Zone NE Corner
25°50'23.79"S 28°26'55.42"E

Kitty Hawk Aero Box Safety Zone SE Corner
25°52'50.94"S 28°27'3.86"E

(Google Earth .kmz files appended for your ease)

I, for one, will most certainly be inserting these four points in my GPS to ensure that I do not stray into the Kitty Hawk aerobatics box when next visiting the airfield

Let's keep it safe guys!
