6 Dams Flight

Postby John.com » Fri Jan 22, 2016 8:40 am

Hey Fellow Pilots!

Low flying along the edges of a dam is always a special thrill. Besides you being assured (in most cases) of there not being any cables at the water's edge, with the levels being so low at the moment due to the drought, the risks of have to conduct an emergency landing from low level flight are largely eliminated due to the wide surfaces of exposed shoreline.

I recently did this 'Six Dam' trip which I wanted to share with you:
6 Dams Flight Routing.jpg
1. Taking off from Aeroden, overfly the northern ridge and then drop down to the shores of Hartebeespoort Dam (#1) and route anti-clockwise around the dam.
2. Route over the dam wall and then track along the Crocodile River, through the gorge through Drie Berg, and on to Roodekoppies Dam (#2).
3. Fly north-west towards Vaalkop Dam (#3).
4. Then route south-south-east and fly over Boskop Dam (#4), which is north of Rustenburg.
5. From there, route south-south-west over Rustenburg and on to Olifantsnek Dam (#5), which is on the Magaliesberg northern ridge.
6. Finally, route east over the northern ridge to Buffelspoort Dam (#6), before routing due east for Aeroden.

I have attached the Google Earth .kmz files for your interest.

It really is a cool flight, about two hours in all!

How about a gaggle of trikes making the trip from Aeroden? Any takers?

Safe Skies!

Sounds good. I'll keep a lookout here for a forthcoming date. (Just not tomorrow, we are having our AP's done at Brits).
Ideal trip for some more proving flight hours.
