Hi guys, im situated near the klipriver microlight club. I am going to be starting my MPL soon, and i am pondering buying my own trike.

I feel that it would be better to learn on something that i am going to be flying myself. Is there anything in particular that i should be looking out for when buying a trike? I mean i have heard a lot about "Windlass, Aquilla etc." but which one is more comfortable to fly as a beginner.

As well as what instrumentation, wing or other things to look out for.

Thanx for the info man, im looking to spend between R40 000 and R60 000. being my first trike, im not looking to spend a lot of money but was wondering if there is anything out there in that price range. I guess its pretty much preference hey?

If u dont mind, can i ask some more questions??

How many hours is a lot for a trike?
Im only around 60kg's so what size wing do you recommend?

I also had the option of buying a windlas, with a cosmos wing, aquilla suspension, and full instrumentation. The wing looks a bit old in the pic though.... for R45 000.... what do you think??

I would suggest you get an AP to check out the trike before you get suckered like i did. (Two years and still repairing "SMALL" things) Not that all sellers are sharks but there are some out there. The trike looks cool, i would have a close look at the wing as that is one of the more inportant parts but ultimately the end decision is yours to make.

Flyby, have you been to various airfields in the area and asked the guys. I know Porra at Panorama has a single ignition 503. he says that when he's on his own, she's fine - but when with a pax, she has a very anaemic climb rate. Remember, you don't want to get a motor to small - ESPECIALLY when you are training / learning o fly. it's like trying to overtake 3 trucks on van reenens, in a chico1.3 with 4 fat bastards and a coolbox in it. you want that little bit of extra power to get you out the dwang. I fly a 503 on the coast. on my own, she's great, but on a hot humid durban december day, with a pax, she climbs very slowly.

Another viewpoint. Don’t buy a plane now. Train on the schools trike until you go solo or are about to go solo. That way you will have a lot more experience and a better idea of what you need. Another good reason for waiting is that if (or when?) you bend the plane, (it does happen) it is the schools responsibility to repair it. If you wait you will also be in a better position to decide if you want to carry on flying and, if you do, whether you want to on fly a trike or up/down grade to a 3-axis.

You've missed the deal of the century with a month

My plane was the perfect one for you to start out with, but as Demon says, if your budget allows it, go the 4-stroke route.

Luckily your light(60kg) so even a 503 for a start should be more than efficient for you.

Make sure it has a "C" gearbox!

Just Remember if you do train on your trike it is much much cheaper for training and you learn to fly your own trike!!!

Consider to buy a hangluider. With that kind of kg's you do not need a motor.
