Radio station license... do I need one?

Postby Biggles » Wed Jul 05, 2006 2:24 pm

I am abit confused recently as to where I need a Radio station licence.

I believe a hand held doesn't require one... and that the a restricted radio license is good enough for microlighting. But I see it is listed as one of the documents that must be carried at all times...

Anyone have a definitive answer?

From what I recall is that if a radio appears on your Minimum Equipment List (MEL) you must have a station licence. (Irrespective if it be a handheld or fixed unit)

Is it on the minimum equipment list for a trike microlight? If so how much do they cost and where do you get them?

Each and every radio in South Africa has to have a radio licence. If it is a portable radio, and you might change radio's on the plane, or also use it as a ground station from time to time, you need a radio licence which is linked to an individual / business name and general geographical area.

If it is built into the aircraft, you have to have a radio-station licence linked to the aircraft.

Wherever you use your radio, you have to have this licence with you. Whether just a Radio Licence for a portable radio or a Radio Station Licence for a built-in radio.

It is an equipment list which is usually kept in your logbook. This is a list, of which CAA has a copy, of all the equipment your aircraft is supplied with.

It comes standard with each aircraft when its registered, a copy is sent to CAA and a copy is in your logbook.

If you change equipment, your AP should write a new one, and a copy of this should go to CAA, and a copy of the new one should go into the logbook.

Simple answer is YES as stated above. I am going to get new one on Monday. Will get couple Xtra forms, but think they will fax these to you as well.

Just read your question again. ONLY if you own a radio do you need one. If you are hire & fly jockey or student the shool aerie will have one. Obviously if you own your own aerie (with radio in) or a handheld you will need one.

Is the radio license required to renew a microlight's ATF?

Thanks Demon. Same here. I sold a plane in 2001, and so far could not get them to stop sending me the annual bill. Have given up trying, and also stopped paying.

Woops typo, meant to say whether not where...

Have my own tryk now, got a while to get all the paperwork involved overwith.

Seems that its not something everyone gets though, the guy didn't have a radiostation licence when I bought it, he said it did not apply to handhelds, the AP who did the CAA ownership transfer papers put "not applicable" next to the spot where he puts "radio station licence present" on the forms.

Out of the country at the moment and faxing the middle of the bush doesn't work well. RV4ker do you think you could scan-e-mail a copy too me? Will PM my e-mail...

My understanding is that all aircraft should have an equipment list and an MEL is only required for aircraft over 5700 Kg. MEL specify what is the minimum equipment required for that specific aircraft to fly legaly. If the radio is "fitted to the aircraft" you should have a radio station licence.

Does a handheld connected to an intecom count as fitted to an aircraft?

Sorry to persist on this...
