Friend: "I dreamt that you crashed" - Would you still fly?

I would be interested is soliciting some opinion around this matter . . . .

I had planned to take my son flying today (Sunday). However, yesterday I received an SMS from a close friend saying that they had dreamt that I had crashed my aircraft with my son on board!

I know that this is bordering on 'spiritual', but what would YOU have done? Go . . . or No-Go??

John, I would have done the flight as planned. I truely believe, if its my time it is, no matter with what I am busy at the time .... this is based on spiritual.

Did the sms state that the accident would have been on today's flight ?

The decision to fly should be based on cold, hard and honest facts. By cold and hard facts I mean the airworthiness of my craft, weather conditions, etc. These are all measurable.

By honest facts I mean, honest to myself whether I want to go ahead with a flight despite a serious hangover, or ignoring a known medical condition, stress etc.

What is left after taking the above into consideration might be a totally unexpected heart failure/stroke or whatever during the flight. But that is not in my own control. Nor is it in the dream of another.

Flying is hugely psychological and if further outside factors start to spook with the facts, one could just as well stop flying.

I as pilot can only make decisions based on the "controllable factors". Weather, airworthiness, human factors, personal limits.... etc etc.

The "uncontrollable factors" will always be out there, and we are all vulnerable to them.

No amount of muti from the local sangoma can help you there.

No flight taken is without risk.

Think about it this way...

You had planned to fly. You felt good about the flight and confident in your ability to do it safely. Then an sms...a "vision"....saying you will crash.

Now you harbour self doubt in your above ability...and THAT is what changed your mind, not the "prophecy". Self doubt is a human factor, and you should not have been in the air with that state of mind, so good on you.

Next time you fly you will feel different.

Just to add my two cents...

1) It took a lot for a friend of yours to approach you with what they did. Imagine the remorse and regret they would have had should something have happened and he didnt say anything ?

2) I have a very unwelcome 'gift' - I get premonitions that do actually happen, and I only share very little information on them with my wife

If within limits of both personal and meteorological - Im not sure if the "dreamer" provided a date but otherwise you will never fly in anticipation of whats to come. Arrive at the airfield and on the back of your solid experience, make a call. I agree however with all that say if your not feeling lekker and comfy in your own head about something then rather put the plane away and have a beer.

I also had a dream the other night.

I dreamt that I had finished building my RV12 and I was flying it - only by remote control like a RC plane.

So should I stop building now, because I don't want a F.......g full size remote RV?

WTF Fly man. If its your time and you don't fly you are going to get hit by a bus or something else.

I think if you have any doubt about flying on any particular day then stay on the ground....
