Buying a used trike

Hi

What is the main items to watch for when you buy a used trike?
I am considering buying one, but things like TBO time, wing age etc causes some doubt.
I have seen some very nice looking trikes at reasonable prices. Some ads get a lot of attention others dont even get a reply.

Would like to get some advice from this forum.

I am also based in Cape town (not my fault) thus viewing could be a problem.

Thanks

Nico

Nico, If you havent got your license yet, do that first. (or at least start.) Your instructor will be invaluble as far as what to look out for when buying. In fact he would be a good one to check a potential trike over for you.
There are a thousand things to look for.
Good Luck.

Hey Nico-o, welcome to the forum! (^^)

Yes, I agree with Grumpy, if you are still to do your NPL...do that first!
During your training you will learn a hell of a lot about the trike and it will certainly help you make an informed decision after some time in the air. (!!)

Depending on where the trike is currently situated... I would advise you to get the nearest AP ("Authorised Person" its basically what we refer to as our qualified aircraft "mackies" (^^) ) to go and have a look at it and give you their opinion.
Yes, it will cost you a couple hundred bucks...but it will ensure you don't buy a money trap too!
Beware missing info in logbooks! If hours don't add up...ASK QUESTIONS!!

The vast majority of pilots are honest and they look after their machines well (for obvious reasons)...but yes there are many sharks out there so you need to be very careful.

If the trike you want to buy is anywhere in Gauteng...I'm sure Alex Rudd would be willing to have a look at it for you. PM (Private message) me if you need his no.

Good luck and welcome to our crazy world. (^^)

PS...if you based at the coast then you should really consider a 503 powered trike....perfect for coastal conditions and I have seen perfectly flyable 503 Windlasses go for as little as R25- R30k.... It's a buyers market at the moment, serious bargains around. (^^)

Lekker....have fun and enjoy your training!

The wing and engine are the most expensive bits so it's important to have these two well looked at before you hand over cash...also look at any accident history and related repair work carefully. A lot of these "bargains" are approaching "timex" so even if you do get it at a great price you could be faced with a costly overhaul or wing replacement sooner than you'd like.... Most instructors have a very good technical knowledge of their aircraft...listen to the "grey beards" and I'm sure you will find a suitable aerie for yourself soon. (^^) There are many AP's throughout the country and most will be more than happy to help you make a good choice. (!!)

Enjoy the shopping. (^^)
