An SAA flight from Cape Town to Johannesburg has been the target of what appears to be an attempted hijacking. Cape Town - An SAA flight from Cape Town to Johannesburg was the target of what appears to be an attempted hijacking on Saturday morning.
According to SAA, a passenger threatened crew members, demanding access to the cockpit. The passenger was then subdued.
A passenger on the plane told Reuters the man was believed to be a foreign national but the motive for his actions was unclear.
"As we speak he has been handcuffed and leg-cuffed," passenger Georgie Frater told Reuters by telephone from the plane.
SAA spokesperson Jacqi O'Sullivan told News24, "SAA can confirm that flight SA322 from Cape Town to Johannesburg has returned back to Cape Town safely, and no one was injured.
"A passenger threatened crew members, demanding access to the cockpit, he was then subdued.
"The aircraft is back on the ground, where it was met by Emergency Services personnel. Passengers have left the aircraft to be reconciled with their baggage. They will then be returned to the terminals, where they will be met by SAA care teams.
The flight had taken off from the airport before the incident occurred at 10.30am. It was due to arrive in Johannesburg at 11.40am.
Airports Company of South Africa spokesperson Deidre Hendricks said, "There were no departures or arrivals at the airport for a period of approximately 40 minutes to allow for the situation to be dealt with as per standard procedure. All flights resumed at 11.37 am and the airport is fully operational."
Police were not available for comments, and it was not immediately clear how many passengers were on board.

It all occured while I was flying and I heard it over 124.8 that there had been an attempted hijacking. All the little GA guys were told to hold for 30 minutes, and they were talking about diverting to Stellenbosch etc. When I landed we tuned to Cape Town Tower and approach expecting some level of exitement and they were calm as could be, just another day in Africa. Some of the heavy pilots asked for clearence to fly around the penisula to show their passengers the mountain etc "to relieve the boredom", the one pilot said.
Was an interesting end to a good day's flying.
Even encountered Junkie in the sky for a while and all he wanted to know is whether their was another braai going as Morning Star.
Did manage a few beers while listing to the airways before heading home.
