Requesting info/guidance LONG international Flight

Hey all,

Im wondering... damn that can be dangerous some times too --- whats involved in flying an LSA from a far away land to South Africa - ABOVE GROUND MOSTLY, with the odd Sea flight for lets say around 280miles to the next ground patch? Anyone know whats involved? Logistically i can imagine must be a total nightmare, specially if crossing between 9and 12 countries.

Let me know if there is any information dump somewhere, where one is able to investigate something like this?

Yes, they would be the experts on this. As far as I know, flying over water is also a hell of a thing as you need some safety gear for that. If you read the book of Ricky Agrela where they flew trike around the world, the even had to have a life raft on their trikes for the flight over the ocean

I don't think I have the balls for that. Will leave that for the A380 and me as pax I am npow comfortable with flying between Botswana and SA but doubt if I would go any further than that.....well, maybe to Maputo but that is about that

thanks for the info guys, im planning on flying to the USA to build a plane and then fly it back to S.A -- its a World War 1 replica, thought it might be a good idea, listening to the stories herein, maybe it isnt.

Wow... Just imagine one of those super-low wing loading parasol wings flying the Greenland crossing... Super cold, tossed around by the wind, and somedays flying backwards in a 'moderate' wind . Probably not the ideal plane to do the crossing in .

Chris, one of the first Cheetahs was bought here and flown to Europe... I can't recall the details though but it did involve crossing the Med.... Sounds like a trip of a lifetime but also given the logistics, the end of one. Maybe its the pessimist in me that cautions...

Crossing the Med is nothing - crossing the Atlantic is the problem.

It can certainly be done - but you need to have the time an patience to wait days, or even weeks for the right weather.

But before contemplating a long trip in one of these planes, read the 'Dawn Patrol' articles in the Kitplanes magazines. It is written by a group of enthusiasts who fly these planes at airshows across America. You will see that they will often trailer the planes to an airshow 100 miles from home base - this should give you an idea of how pleasant long distance flying is in these planes .
