How did you come up with your Microlighters username?

Postby D2O » Sun Jun 02, 2013 10:14 am

Ok, so this topic is for those like me who didn't use their real name or plane's registration when they registered their usernames on Microlighters
So, what made you think up your username, and what does it mean?

Well, mine comes from a documentary I watched on Discovery a few years ago about a ship that was sunk off the coast of Norway that was thought to contain barrels of Heavy Water (Deuterium Oxide, or D2O).
It was to be used as an experiment in nuclear weapons by the Nazis towards the end of the 2nd world war.

The scary thing, is that D2O is present in our everyday drinking water, but in tiny amounts. It takes a long and repetitive process of hydrogenation to extract the Deuterium into its usable form. It is called heavy water, as the extracted hydrogen from the water molecules leaves behind a much heavier molecule. This D2O molecule is used in uranium enrichment. A process necessary in forming the radioactive isotope needed for the manufacture of nuclear weapons.
Just to think that our everyday drinking water could be used as a crucial part of a process in manufacturing nuclear weapons! (**)

I've since used the term D2O on most forums I've registered on, as the story had a profound affect on me.
Nothing to do with flying, but it's too late to change my username now

Great Noel...now the FBI will be watching your every post!

Mine is far less scientific I'm afraid...which is good cause I failed that subject at school

During High School the sitcom "Married with Children" was very popular....it was during MNet open time...haha (geez remember that! )
When I was 15 I got my first weekend job at the Hatfield fleamarket....I sold veld skoene there on Sundays. Go figure...n soutie wat "vellies" verkoop!
Anyway... one of my friends made the correlation between Al Bundy (also a shoe salesman on the show) and me and that was it...been my nickname ever since. :)

Have been a fan of "The Adventures of Asterix the Gaul" since childhood. I still read the fruits from the pen and brush of Messrs Goscinny and Uderzo, as I push 40! Couple to that the winged helmet, the yellow moustache and the "wit" in the dialogue - and you have - Asterix!

PS: I own ALL of them...

I started off studying Horticulture, but kicked it as I was more interested in trees, the cultivation of trees, and preservation of old trees. As it happened my late Father was in just such a business, called "Treecare cc" 8) . So I started working for my Father and done a 7year stint with him learning what I would consider a trade as such. Therefore I am what is referred to as a "Tree Surgeon" and have been in the industry for 30 years. I also had the priveledge of working with the Tree Surgeons at KEW Royal Botanic garden in London.
My real name is Jean Crous , therefore the username "JeanTree" makes perfect sense, ........dont you think??????????

Have spent the last thirty years in the boating industry, mostly renting craft from the beach to earn a crust. Don't need a span of imagination to guess the rest vhpy

I stay on the western side of Harties.
Relative close to Nyoka Ridge - vulture breeding centre.
While making frequent flights from here to our farm North of Thabazimby, I have the dubious good fortune of frequently encountering various species of vultures. ( in afrikaans - Aasvoel)
Hence the direct translation aas voel - bait bird.
Hope to continue JUST sharing my flight WITH them.
Note: they DO fold their wings and DIVE when getting close or surprising them - maintain level flight or climb when you see them!

Up until last year I was a First Officer (or co-pilot) with SAA, until I got my upgrade to Captain, hence the "FO" for the first part of my username.

I also flew gyro's up until end of last year as well, until I bought a share in a RV, hence the "Gyro" for the 2nd part of my username.

Guess I should change "FO Gyro" to "Captain RV" vhpy

We are a foursome of mates who meet 11h30 every Saturday morning (if not flying) for Coffee and muffin at a busy streetside coffeeshop where we check out the shoppers (ladies) and how they park and drive etc and just have a good laugh, and talk lost of kak. It's now called the Grumpy old mens club, and the meeting is called Grumpies and I'm called grumpy. So there !!! vhpy vhpy
