Not sure what the question is about.

Local legislation now allows on condition - if you have an AP that is able to do the necessary checks, compression, big end, small end, crank bearings etc - if all within spec you are good to go. However, a 582 at 1 000 hours has either been previously overhauled or may well be in need of an overhaul, but as far as I am aware, there is no magic number that this has to happen at.

Oom Paul, have your AP take a good look at the engine before you leave...if all in spec then there is no reason why you cant fly it to the 1200hr mark at least. You just really dont want to get stuck in "fokweetwaarfontein" waiting for your trailer! :(

When you get back, chat to someone like Alex Rudd and see if there is a "trade in option" avalable? He has quite a collection now of 582's of various ages and I'm sure he has an engine that will suit your needs.

1000 hrs is definately on the older side so if I was you I'd be preparing for a major overhaul or replacement soon.

Good Luck (^^)

My Rotex have 900 hrs on the clock.
I bought it at 320 hrs.
I use any available mineral two stroke oil.
Whether it is mobil, caltex, lawnmower, chainsaw, outboard or what have you..As long as it is two-stroke oil.
Have a nice day. ## ## ##
Have an AP check out your engine. Maybe even, as a precautionary in preparation for your 2 month Namibian odyssey, insist on a top end overhaul. i.e. Decoke, new rings, new gudgeon pins & new small end roller bearings. Costs about R5 000. Some AP's recommend this overhaul at 300 hrs. FABA's school did 1200 Hrs & 1400 hrs with their training 582's and recently replaced them as a precaution. At Petit the instructor had a crank failure at 310 hrs.
