Wondering if anyone is interested in flying down and camping out in the Hakskeen pan - it was scheduled for later this year, but the rainy season will more than likely stop the event as its in Northern Cape -- they planning on having this April 2014 --
the event is going to be one of the biggest events on the planet - with a Formula1 engine used as a fuel pump - they expect to achieve 1000MPH land speed record. If you like planes, the chances are that you obviously have a liking for internal combustion engines, whether fast or slow -- camping will be available, and i guess hotels, challets in town, I prefer to camp, i believe the landing facilities are going to be well organized and suit all types of planes.
Perhaps a convoy? perhaps early days still, but something to think/save up for

For the flight to Hakskeen Pan? None to my knowledge . . . . just maintenance of vertical and horizontal separation insofar as flight safety is concerned!Turbo wrote:What's the restrictions with flying in convoy or in a crowd ...?
I would think that on the day of the record attempts there would be restrictions placed on the flights in the area of the pan. Beyond NOTAMs issued for the area on those days, I would think that respect for the world record attempt should limit most pilots from simply 'straying into the area'! They will most certainly have film crews in the air on the days concerned.

Re: Bloodhound SSC - world land speed record

Does the land-speed record attempt co-inside with the Hakskeenpan fly event.? ( I dont think so!)
And furthermore to my knowledge there are no towns or hotels in the area to book into!

Count me in. I was hoping that the Bundu Bash was going to coincide with the Bloodhound, but this is not to be. From what I can gather, the Bloodhound record attempt is now going to only take place next year, but let's keep this thread going in preparation for a fly in whenever it happens.
Re: Bloodhound SSC - world land speed record
Just copied this off their web site (Bloodhound)
Some breaking news this month. We’ve been working on timings for the final build of Bloodhound SSC for a couple of months now, to see if it is practical to get out there by the end of this year. With some 200 technical partners, product sponsors and suppliers to include in the planning, it’s a wide-ranging conversation! We have also had to take into account the weather in the Northern Cape in South Africa, where we are going to run. The rainy season stretches from about November through to April, so the weather could stop us running during that period.
So here’s the new plan that we’re now going to deliver – we will be test-running the EJ200 jet engine in the Car in October of this year (our fifth Birthday: how time flies when you’re building a 1000 mph Car), followed by runway testing at the start of 2014 and then off to South Africa around Easter next year.
This is a slightly disappointing delay, as we won’t make it to the desert this year, but looking at the weather cycle and the build programme, it’s the right decision.

Re: Bloodhound SSC - world land speed record
There certainly is no hotel or accomodation at hakskeenpan, its gonna be a full on camping outing, guess im gonna smell like a schwarts for a few days of its R3500.00 for that miniature gas run water heater which we can connect to a portable shower... Damn, i doubt the Cheetah will be able to load that much weight with all the stuff this trip will need.
Anyone have a baclup vehicle that is willing to go through - we will need water, food etc etc -- who knows if there will be any of this there - certainly hope so.
